I was looking at the maintenance schedule for my KJ, and see that at 30K miles, it says that I need to change my spark plugs and inspect the transfer case fluid. do i need to replace the spark plugs at 30K? do i need to really do anything with the transfer case fluid?thanks!

i would recommend a change.....spark plugs should be changed fairly frequently, i usually do 10k miles or so...but they DO last longer, just my preference

and transfer case fluid would be nice to change.... its good to get some fresh fluids in now, and swap to a synthetic blend finally and remove the old gushy stock stuff....remember its the original fluids on a new vehicle so you want to get that junk and crap that was from the break in of the gears and stuff out finally

i would do the tranny, front and rear differentials as well....and coolant in the radiator and engine (full flush + refill)

its gonna be about 100 if you do it all yourself, but its a good thing to get done

30k is a great time to do diffs, transfer case and plugs. I find that the plugs start to wear out around 25k or so and a fresh set makes a noticeable improvement to drivability and mileage. You should definately consider quality synthetic fluids when changing as you will then be able to extend your service intervals a little longer.

He already has full synthetic Transfer case fluid. Came that way from the factory, but he neds to change it.

Just jumped in on this one, but are the spark plugs difficult to reach? The rear two cylinders appear to be quite far back....

Also, how much are libby plugs? I had to use NGK platinum plugs at over $10 each on my turbo golf....

The rear passengerside is a bit of a pain even with the intake tube removed but not too bad with the right tools.

BTW most people find the platinum plugs usually run worse in the turbo golf you had than the correct heat range coppers.

just got back from pepboys, and they said that the spark plugs should last 100K miles. he said he would only recomend changing them if you want to waste some money. is this correct?

Well, looking at my owners manuals maintance section it says to replace the spark plugs every 30,000 miles, might have changed from '02 to '05 though.Replaced my plugs at 20,000 miles and they where gapped at .090 and where supposed to be .042(they where burned that much),bye bye NGK and hello good ole autoltes.

For the libby, no.

Just changed my plugs at 74K, don't know if the dealer did them before I bought it, but it sure looks like they didn't. The electrode was so worn that the gap was around 3-4x what it needs to be. I've always used Autolite or Champion coppers on my Mopars and the mileage statement is true, I'm doing much better now.

I finally changed my plugs at 70K miles, yeah, they were a bit overdue. My buddy and I gap'ed em and they were at .07 and burnt to a nice brown crisp. I put in Bosch platinum/iridium/ nucleur or something like that. I had one time since then that it seems not to fire right when I started up. Tried again and it started just fine.

Here's a comparison picture at 28K or so and new.Notice the rounded center electrode and missing v-groove.Sparks like to jump from nice, square electrodes. The KJ has a nice hot crank triggered ignition and is kinda hard on plugs.

I like Autolite plugs. I usually get the single platinum ones. They don't conduct quite as well as pure copper but they don't wear as quickly. I would stay away from Bosch especially the +4s. They tend to work well for about 5-10k miles and then wear out very quickly.

I had to go back and reread that PepBoys told someone they should last 100,000 miles! I change mine every 25 to 28,000. To me its cheap insurance because 1. It makes it run better 2. you get a look at how well the engine is running if you know how to read the plugs and 3. it gives me another reason to play with my Liberty

yea.. change then after 30k.. They do not last much longer than that in the libbys.
You will find them to be pretty fouled up, and out of gap spec.

Well I just hit 32K and I am now feeling the sensation of a little misfiring as I sit at red lights. Funny thing, it did not do that before I went to get an oil change at the Dealer, but was doing it immediately after the oil change.

Time to change the plugs.
