Post subject:  RL diff cover , strange leak
its not RL's fault or anything, marty its a great product.....

just a question...... i finally got aroudn to installing it 2 days ago....and i filled it up and noticed it was leaking a bit...i drove a few hundred miles and was aggrivated it was still leaking ...

so i took it off, thinking maybe not enough RTV to seal it up....and i cleaned and reapplied more RTV to hopefully get a better bead....and i even added a few ounces of some engine oil stop leak

well that was last night, and now today it is dripping from the same area....

i took a few pics, whats weird is....it looks like it is dripping from where the weld is on the bottom portion of the cover

does anyone have any suggestions or insight to this?....i dont want to constantly deal with a dripping cover.....

the red arrows are where it is coming from...please help!

EOD,

Is it leaking right there at those two spots or is the fluid sliding down from the weld seams from another spot and dripping right there? Could it be from the bolts?

I am getting ready to paint mine and have mine installed soon and don't want any issues with mine if it is a common thing.

Have you emailed/called Marty?

havent spoken to marty yet.....i dont know where its leaking from....im almost positive its NOT the bolts - nothing is really coming from them, and i also put some thread sealer on the threads

i dont know if its leaking from somewhere and dripping down - or dripping from the corner of the welds

but im going with the weld problem, only because to me it seems its from there

i have a enough RTV on it i know htat...so im not sure whats up...or if there is a way to fix it without rewelding....hopefully it seals up on its own

could be a breach where the edge of the weld meets the cover...essentially there is a small gap b/w the weld and the cover thus allowing fluid to leak through it...if you happen to take it off again clean it up really good and try to force air through that area and see if you can feel some going through that area of the cover....it might just need a bit more welding there to cover it up...that is if that is the case at all....

Mine leaked from the same exact spots. I finally got mine sent off UPS yesturday. Marty said he will fix the welds.

Just remember everyone that Rock Lizard does not make these covers,another company does and he just got a really good deal for us.So nobody blame him,he will fix them but is not selling them anymore because of problems like this.

problem is my stock cover is cracked, so i might be down a day or two then to get the weld fixed...i REALLY dont want to deal with taking it off again, oh well i guess i have to

I totally agree! If I had a welder and the skills to do this myself I would not even bother him with it. But have neither.


On a side note, I did an inspection after my last wheelin trip, and my stock cover is pealed back at one of the corners. It is not leaking but I am surprised. If the other cover was on there, I'm sure it wouldn't have bent.

ooooh i have a quick idea...dont know if this will work

whatttttt if i jack it up so the fluid isnt really pushing out that spot , ya know gravity flowing the other way

and try to jbweld those spots closed on the outside of the cover?

hmmm....probaby not the best idea, but what od you think? anyone?

i have no problem sending it out to marty....but im in hawaii, and shipping / turn around is stupid to send it back out

so ill try to fix it here...

product is great though, this is the only problem i have encountered with it

could be an easy quick fix....get it really clean first and then wam splat...jbweld on there quick....i don't see anything wrong with that...temporary of course until you get time to really get it worked on, then again i'm not sure how well the jbweld stuff will hold for long periods of time so it could be a permanent fix....

yeah im gonna do that...just dont know if it will present a problem since it might leak when trying to dry....maybe ill drain it A-Friggin-GAIN first

Just leave it jacked up while the JB weld dries(could also park it on a hill with the nose down). Would probably be best to do it after the Jeep has been sitting for awhile so that the fluid is cool and thick. :wink:

cool well...im finishing a movie, so ill let it drip a bit more outside, and then go get some jbweld

ill let you all know how it goes


but i think from now on, IF ANYONE HAS THIS COVER UNINSTALLED, GO WELD IT FIRST!

Go with the JB weld ... i swear by that stuff, had it on a engine side plate of my Motorcross bike and it lasted through some bad crashes! Its worth a try for now until you can get some spot welding done

You would have had to redo the seal, but you could have put it on the INSIDE for a more permanent seal. I used in bush Alaska on a water pump that was wearing away from electrolisis, and it lasted better than the aluminum housing.

well i put it on the outside...i COULD have done on the inside, but well, i didnt want to take it off for the 3rd time in 3 day haha, next time i will have it spot welded

but the jb weld did the trick so far..... it is leaking where the arrows are on my pictures, on the corner there is a small notch where the 3 plates meet and you can actually stick a fingernail in a "gap" that is created, im sure right there is where the seal wasnt formed properly and is slowly leaking out

a tiny tiny piece i missed but retouched just now, so ill give it a few days test and see if it will stya put

I have yet to install mine & I hope I don't come across this problem. If I get have a similar problem with mine (knock on wood) I'll probably take it to a local shop to have them fix it. It won't be more than a few bucks.
Rock Lizards products are great; Marty did make sure that we were all aware that these are not his. He put his name and reputation out there for us and we got a great deal. Hopefully no one else jumps in with the same weld problems.
