Alright at the risk of sounding stupid I'll ask anyway. This is my first Jeep I've ever owned '06 Sport 4x4 and that little black lever has been calling my name! I want to get a lift put on but with all the suggestions flying around I tend to get a little confused as where to go. My question is what exactly does a lift kit consist of? Why couldn't I go to NAPA and buy some new (longer) springs and shocks? Would that not work to lift my KJ? I know, I'm sure all of you are laughing but a kit seems to be a pretty hefty investment I just want to do it right and most importantly ONCE! Otherwise I'm considering the "RockFather 1". Any disputes? |

If napa can order the right springs and knew what to get, then that would work out just fine. Ive never heard of anyone doing that though. Basically a lift consists or new springs and shocks.. Thats about it. The Rustys Lift is a good all around lift besides his rear shocks. The bushings are not the correct size and they rattle.

If you go with a 1.5"-2.0" lift, you will avoid some hassles. You will most likely be well within the parameters of CVJoint and UpperBallJoint ranges. You can still fit some decent size tires on with that much lift. If you go higher to 2.5", go with a lift that replaces your stock springs and upgrades shocks and bumpstops. AllJs, Rusty's Offroad and Rocky Road all have some good lifts. Stay away from OTT lifts...where the main spacer is on top of the strut. Just figure out how far you want to go and don't forget to add the proper protection like Skids and Sliders. |

I got Rusty's 2.5" coil kit during the first group buy about 3 years ago and it was in my garage for about $425 shipped. I now have 35k miles on it and it has been excellent. It consists of coils and shocks with dust covers. The shock bushings for the rear are a little too small so it comes with washers. It did rattle a little but I just re-torqued them about 3 times and they quit. They have not rattled in at least a year. It also rides about 100000 times better than it did stock. I pounded the pinch welds in the front finder wells and run 245/75's with zero rubbing and still get 20mpg on the highway. Or, you could wheel it stock and serenade the wildlife with the rock on metal sound of your KJ hitting everything over 5" high on the trail. Let's face it, in stock suspension form, the KJ is a grocery getter but with a small lift, it really comes to life. Hmmm, that is going to upset some people, he he.

If I remember correctly, the Rockfather 1 is the bad bad lift that nobody should buy. Someone correct me if I am wrong. |

The problem lift is the 'budget lift' - it puts the spacer on top of the strut i.e. the OTT - the Rockfather I and II kits are spring/bottom of spring spacer kits - they're okay However as noted you don't need a lift to go offroad - you do need armor - skid plates - gas tank & transmission and rock rails - I think most Libertys comes with Engine skids. Mopar skids will work for light offroad however if you eventually want to do serious rocks - then get serious skid plates. Troy's is still a good reference http://www.youngs.org/kjparts/ |
