I'm planning to take my jeep to the 1/4 mile track when it opens this spring. I was thinking about launching in 4wd for max traction then shifting to 2wd when I hit like 30ish. Yeah yeah I know jeeps arent made to go fast, racing is bad for your vehicle, ect. Whats the worst that could happen, realistically? I've hear of peoples front diffs breaking when getting a sudden load, but I dont think that one hard strip launch would do that. T-case is probably ok, I was thinking that more than likely my clutch would let go, if anything did.

Well most of the oil burners(full size pichups) that drag race launch in 4 wheel drive(I they have it) and do the whole 1/4 in 4x4.I wouldn't recommend it,use 2wd and lower the rear tire psi to get better off the line traction.

I doubt traction will be an issue on a heavy butt KJ w/ a 3.7L V6. Most tracks spray the starting line w/ a traction compound that will allow even light/powerful cars to hook up. Let us know what kind of times you run.

ya the 3.7 may not have traction issues in 2wd but my CRD still did. i had to put it in full time to get traction without spining the tires off the line.

Turn off the ESP or you are going to bog off the line. I used to go out to the strip in my G35 coupe which had a similar traction control system. My friend and I would run head to head, and we would have to remind each other to shut off the ESP before every run.

So you were planning on shifting a six speed and also shifting from 4 wheel drive to 2 wheel drive while running the quarter.....must have more hands, fingers and toes than I do, or going awfully slow......either way just do it two wheel I would say

no 4wd its hard to get a good launch on a sticky track in 2wd. just hard on your componets not meant for launching its meant for mud and loose gravel.

Even if you did launch in 4wd, why would you want to shift back to 2wd when you were running down the strip? If your stock, dont expect anything better than the 17's.

Just drive around the water box when you pull up to the staging area and try to clean off the tires a little bit before going down the strip... Tires with tread just leave water in the burnout area so that the guys with slicks get all mad.

I'm guessing because of the speed limit on 4wd.. My buddy has a sick RCSB Chevy with a 6.0 in it and he hooks up with the 4wd then shifts it to 2wd as well, high 12 second truck.

who are you going to be racing against? other liberties or just any suv? I don't know but libby is just OK at getting up without slippage in 2x4, however for some reason tranny seems to act better and more stable when it is in 4x4. Do your test runs a few times on highway or red light then see what suits you best. Good Luck, drive safe.

You're guna have your hands tied trying to shift and drop out of 4X4 at the same time...as welll as steer. Not saying it can't be done...but thats guna be tricky. I'm sure it would be fun though. You'll probably get a lot of looks when you pull in there...make sure to find a Civic to run against.

1/4 mile straight line in 4WD shouldnt hurt a thing. Rev the piss out of it dump the clutch and go. Sorta like an AWD eclipse would. I bet that 1-2 shift comes up real quick though.

But buy a new clutch first...you might have to change it after the run

If you really want a fun ride in a 4wd/AWD, try finding one of these:

Ford Lightning = 500hp w/supercharger
Dodge Ram SRT10 = 500hp w/o supercharger

And to think there is a guy at work with the Dodge that is going to put a supercharger and NO2 on his.

ill take a typhoon any day over those other ones (i like the more luxurious typhoon over the syclone).

super easy to get them to smoke those lame 500 hp trucks if they dont do it stock, i forget.

they have huge potential and were super quick already, i remember them being advertised as 0-60 in 5 seconds, in the rain.

of course my typhoon would have to sit right next to my mid 70s mazda rotary pickup, one of the years it was available i recall it being the quickest vehicle you could buy in north america. beating out the vette, like the little red express truck did that other year. and later the syclone did as well.
