First and foremost, this is not an attack on Al, his product, or any attempt to disparage his name.

I strongly urge everyone of you that has his arms to inspect the welds for stress fractures.

Today at Uwharrie National Forest, my KJ suffered a catastrophic failure while wheeling. The drivers side a arm broke (forward) completely free at the UBJ bung. The rear side of the arm at the bung had a stress fracture through the weld.

IMHO the fillet weld was insufficient for the structural strength required for this part. It also looked like insufficient fusion in the weld.

Pictures and more to follow after I get some sleep.

Thanks to Meredith (JeepinMama), Bill (DirtyKJ), and Mike (Kolesy) for their support and help.

Wow, guess I remember to carry an extra upper a-arm when I go wheeling now. Good thing it didn't happen cruising down the highway at 70-75mph.

Mutt, any tips on inspecting the welds?

Sorry to hear about the trail damage. For a lot of reasons, I hope this is an isolated incident (one bad weld, really hard hit, etc..) and not something we all need to worry about. I'll probably never push my KJ to the limits in which Mutt does (never seen him in action but I've read stories), but I just want to know my KJ is safe for myself and my family.

Any more details on the breakage would be appreciated.

WOW  ,

Please send the set back to me so I can see what happen. I am at work right now, I am not to sure when you ordered them from me. I want to see what hapen. It appears the weld penetration was not great enough.

Al

This is the first, I have not experienced any other failures with arms. Some minor bushing problems when they were welded in, but no failures, even on the sets I have on my KJ. I had placed a third generation set on when I went to the 5.5 inch lift.

Well, there are four lines on Kodak rock, increasing in difficulty from left to right. I was on the third line from the left and darn near made it up. Was bumping it up the ledge when I heard a "Tink", thinking to myself, "Well, there goes a JE Real CV." When I looked out the window though, my wheel was at an angle that wasn't natural.

Al, had to weld it up so I don't know what you could tell by viewing it. Put some hot 7018 on it to get me home. We did our best to get it realigned before welding but roadside repairs are far from perfect. I didn't get my arms directly from you Al, you had a backorder and I was impatient. Ben from Carolina LOST sold me his set and ordered another set from you.

Eddo, I'd remove the paint/powdercoat and look for any signs of cracking in the weld. A magnifying glass sure would help. I wouldn't go so far as getting some dye penetrant to help highlite any indicators.

Awe, it just sounds like a bad case of driver abuse, probably nothing to worry about

JeepinAl, All J,and Rock Lizzard are cream of the crop in our meager list of KJ specialists but they are also the best when compared to anyone.

Just need Marty to get some lizzard stickers....that would be 8)

Post subject:  Had the same thing just happen

Last Saturday I had a weld break on my new Gen IVs. It was the driver side forward piece, also. They've been on about six weeks. Only one day of moderate wheeling in Calico a couple of weeks ago. Otherwise, nothing too difficult. Saturday was a pretty easy trail. I didn't hear any noise except rubbing from the front end after it broke. I don't have any pictures, but it looks just like Mutt's, except mine are red. Gave JeepinbyAl a call this morning, explained the problem and in less than an hour, my replacement set was waiting for the UPS man. Can't beat the service.

Isnt that extremely dangerous? What if the arm breaks at 70mph?
