Rock Lizard got a compliment & a question for the paint

I took my Rock Lizard prototype rear bumper to an auto body paint shop and I showed the guy the bumper so he can give me an estimate on the cost of getting it painted.

He was in awe of how well the welds were done. He said the guy that did those is a very good welder and knows what he is doing. The lines were clean and the bumper was put together really good. He mentioned he does steel work because he races and works on cars.

Now, for the interesting info from his painter. Many of you say to get it painted instead of powdercoating, but the painter said it would be better to powdercoat it because if it is painted and the steel bumper gets hit, it will chip/flake off. Keep in mind, they do not powdercoat, only auto body paint.

Thoughts from the LOST pros?

I had mine powder coated...seemed the best way to go at least for me...the other option would be to durabak it or rhino line it...painting to match would be cool, but I know I would be hitting it at some point, and your painter is probably right. You can get a gallon of durabak for around $100 bucks and do it yourself...it can be brushed or rolled on, so you don't need a compressor or spraygun....mine was $200 to powder coat because they had to run it twice because of how heavy it is. if mine was off the vehicle I would definatly durabak it

If I had a sport, I would go with a black bumper, but with the Reny, I want to keep it matching. I will go with the Powdercoating but it will set me back around $450 instead of a black powdercoating of around $150. Chu-Ching!

Well how bad do you want it to match your paint? And how much do you want to spend? I'm personally rattle canning it for easy touch up.Later down the road I may have it and my ARB Line-Xed.

How well does rhino-lining handle paint? Is it possible to get it rhino lined then paint it to closely match the Light Khaki?

Well I know Line-X can be tinted to match closely.Not sure you can paint any of the spray-on bedliners.Could ask the places that spray them.

I have had Harley parts powdercoated and then had a chip in them and had to start all over. :cry:

If it was me I would paint and just do touch ups. Whatever color you go with you can get a paint store to put some in an aerosol can for later touchups or at least they can do it here. that is if you want to match it. One reason I like Black vehicles, black is pretty much black :wink:

Thanks for the compliments. Wheeling around here you know you are going to chip whatever you paint it with. I would say get it painted to match, and get a bottle of touch up paint. LineX is great stuff, but when you put it between a rock and the steel with the weight of the jeep on it, that stuff will still peel off like an orange. Go with your cheapest option that still matches, that will be easiest to touch up. I'm going to recommend the custom paint and get the touchup bottle.

Powdercoat is nice, but it can peel off too and can be expensive. I'm painting mine with good ol' rattle can hammered silver. Touch ups will be a piece of cake. Paint can made to stick to steel pretty well. It's all surface prep. Self etching primer on clean steel (key to max adhesion), then two coats of metal primer. Mine will be ready for the paint after this primer is prep'd.

Oh yeah-the bumper is a quality made beast. Worth the wait Marty.

I would Powdercoat it if you can find a stock color... then it costs about the same as paint... if you go custom color, you're bummed. Custom runs of powder coat are too expensive.
