i think i have messed it up when i let out on the clutch when the wheel turned it sounds like the rear axle is about to blow up....... what is my best option so that i will not have to deal with this again.

What kind of diff do you have? Open, tracloc, locker? My guess is you have some type of lsd that needs a friction modifier. How long has it been since you changed the diff fluid?

With the libby being such a porker, I suppose you could see if one of these would fit under it. While your at it replace the IFS with one too.

I had rear-end trouble a while back. I heard metal popping and occasionally grinding when I put it in reverse. I could even feel the rear-end bind up. Is that something like what you’re experiencing?

I have a trak-loc and best I can figure the dealer didn't put modifier in when I had had it previously serviced. Anyway, added the modifier and everything in hunky-dorry now
.

You could have these guys build you a near bullet proof axle:

http://www.currieenterprises.com/cestore/default_jeep.aspx

Or you could start searching junkyards for a used Chrysler Corp 81/4. There should be a decent supply wrecked Libertys to find scrap from with the sheer number of Libertys sold so far.

That's a big problem. You should be changing your fluid every 12,000 miles!

Try changing the fluid before you go buying a new diff. I'm guessing you have the Tracloc (stock lsd) since it only happens when turning. In that case there is a friction modifier that needs to be added to the gear oil. If you're not sure then just go to a dealership and have them check it out.

I had a similar problem a couple of years back and come to find out I had broken one of the spider gears in the rear diff. Luckily it was still under warranty at the time. You should be able to see if something is broken by draining the fluid and removing the cover. I had a tooth sitting on the bottom.

Excelent, I'm glad you found your problem. Now that you mention it. I do remember binding up when my wheel was turned, but in my case it just felt like I was in part time 4x4. Dumb dealer replaced my transfer case twice and all that was wrong was the friction modifier had broken down.

BTW, that is something I would like to share with everyone. I've heard that the modifier has been known to break down prematurly. From what I've read, the trak-loc is about the weakest "locker" [limited slip posi] on the market. So far, so good for us. When it breaks I'll put in something nice. :D

Might as well throw a locker in there and never have to worry about spider gears again.

Nice Job!

What were you doing 10 grand hole shots?

It looks like an easy fix, however the dealer prices mabe a little steep. You can go to say Randy's ring and pinion or another shop and order a rebuild kit and a detroit locker or the true track, that will take care of the carrier, if I remember correctly.

Al

Question: Is that the MOPAR 8.25, or did you get stuck with a Dana 35?

WOW, you have quite the toothless critter there.

Wish I could figure out how to do that with my automatic and make it look like an accident. But, please don't tell my wife.

Go! Detroit, and I didn't mean the Lions. :P

I know of a way =)

Step One: Put the car in neutral
Step Two: Use your steel foot and mash that pedal to the floor
Step three: Drop the jeep into drive
Step four: enjoy your destroyed transmission

hope that helped
