I got one of the 1st Rusty's KJ Rock Rails back in 2002 - came with no instructions... Pretty straight foward - hold them up in place and mark the holes on the unibody. As far as the factory plastic (it's been a while...) but if I remember correctly - it pops off from body clips... (I'll check when I get back home Thursday)

You DO NOT have to remove the plastic strips. In fact, DO NOT!!! It will look horrible with them missing (the pinch weld area is not finished in the 05+ Libertys) You just have to make one small trim cut and they fit perfectly. I'll see if I can find the link to the installation instructions. They are on the Rock Lizard site.

Here's the rails installed on my 07. Plastics are intact.

Oops, my bad. You have Rusty's sliders, not Rock Lizard. I would think the trim instructions would be similar, though.

they are on rustysoffroad.com
when i called them they said i had to reove the plastic to make them fit. i tried just holding them up and the mounting plates would sit and inch to low on the frame for it to bolt up right

I still dont think you need to take them off. Follow the instructions given by RL. I know you have Rusty's. Get a hammer or a trim puller and pry the tabs loose. Get pliers and the tabs will just twist out. Now take a knife or a dremel and trim where the two pieces meet in the middle so they both sit flat. There is a little 'L' piece that I cut off on one of them, this helps in sitting flat. My sliders fit right on by doing this. The trim is only maybe 1/8 inch and you have quite a bit of pinch seam to work with. I really can't see Rusty's being that much different unless they drilled the holes in the pinch seam mount really low. If they did, just redrill them higher (new holes).

Sorry to high jack this thread. Scoobybri, where did you get that spare tire antenna mount?? I have been thinking about somewhere to put my antenna so I can put my cobra back in but I didn't want to drill or magnet mount on the body.

u know if u look at the pic on rusty's websit it looks like they took them off (the plastic) any one else see it? and i also compared that photo to photo of all model year kj's and it seems like its gone. not to metion taking the plastic off may give me just a smidge more ground clearance on the sides..

Like I said before, the pinch weld area is not pretty on the 05+ KJs and this is why the plastic is there. If you remove the plastic, it looks unfinished, like if you would remove the wheel well flares. All of the pics on the Rusty's site show the rails on a 02-04 Libbys, which have painted sheet metal there. That sheet metal is NOT there on your Liberty. The plastic is there in its place.

If they do not fit correctly with the plastic intact, than they are designed incorrectly. If Rock Lizard and All-Js install properly on 05-07 Libbys, why don't Rusty's (that's a rhetorical question, by the way! ;)

I just had a thought. Like someone else said, follow the RL instructions that I linked to. There are about 8 round plastic tabs that are between the body and the bottom part of the plastic. They keep the plastic trim away from the body. These need to be removed before installation to allow the plastic to push up against the body. (The bottom "flap" of plastic will be sandwiched between the slider and the body.) They are about 1/2" thick and are probably the reason that the sliders are sitting too low. You need to use a claw hammer to pull them out. (You will need to trim the plastic where it overlaps as well to allow the plastic to lay flat between the slider and the body.)

All of this is in the RL instructions for the 05+ Libertys.

scoobybri, do those size tires fit without the spacers? or do they rub on the inside in the front?

thanks

Here is a picture of the tab that needs to be removed from between the plastic molding and the body. The round end is visible along the bottom of the plastic. Once you remove the tabs, the plastic can press directly up agains the body.

Spacers were added to gain some stability after installing the lift. There was no rubbing until AFTER I installed the spacers. Pinch weld did not rub, but they did rub on the front. A little trimming fixed the problem.
