Post subject:  OEM skid plate question from Newbie

Kia ora to you all from New Zealand

I'm a newbie, having just got my mitts on a 06 CRD limited. I'm very gratefully learning a lot from your posts (like I have a Provent coming...)

I'm about to put OEM skid plates on (our choice is limited here)

Two questions that I'd love an answer to is:

1) :?: My KJ already has a stock skid plate under the engine already, but there is a Mopar engine skid pate listed. Are these the same, or does the Mopar one add something extra? I.e. do I need to buy one of these along with the transmission and petrol tank plates? I can't find this out.

2) :?: The CRD oil filter is very exposed. Is this improved by addition of any of the plates?

Many thanks
Rob

On my CRD, the stock front skid plate is thinner than the stock skid plate on standard Libertys. Some have suggested buying a front one for the standard Liberty to get a thicker one.

The OEM transmission skid plate will help protect that exposed oil filter, and I would advise that one before any other because of the length of the oil filter. Remember, the OEM plates are not the solution for bashing the bottom, they just are not that strong, but they are good piece of mind to stop sticks and rocks from bouncing up and ripping that oil filter off.

The OEM skids are more economical than aftermarket, but as always, you get what you pay for, and the OEM are a compromise between no protection and full protection (aftermarket).

Hope you enjoy the CRD.

Thanks Guys, very helpful of you both. :D

I've ordered both the gas tank and trans skid plates today.

I discovered the mystery of the engine (front plate) skid plate listed as an accessory, when I already have a stock one on from new.

It comes standard with the CDR diesel, but is plastic on the petrol model over here (so the parts chap tells me), maybe cause the CRD is heavier??

Thanks, Rob

I have the MOPAR aftermarket engine (or front transmission) skid, replacing the original CRD skid. They are both made of steel plate, but the MOPAR skid is thicker than the OEM, I believe much stronger. It does nothing for your oil filter, though.
