1. I was out on some forest roads this weekend and I have no clue what I'm doing.
Coming down from the mountain on a steep forest road what gear and transfer case setting should I be using?
I want the engine to slow me down.
I am clueless !

2. If I'm going up the same road should I be in 4-Low because it's steep and I don't want the tranny to overheat?
I'm not talking trails here............just forest roads going up the mountain.

These are roads that a car could go up or down, but they are pretty steep.
Like I said I have no idea what I'm doing. Help !

How fast were you going?

If you are going down something real steap you should be going very slow... below 25 (usually around 5mph or less) and 4-Low gives the best engine braking at that speed and is the safest for your tranny.

Your tranny can also get hot descending as engine braking goes through the torque converter and the tranny fluid-- generating lots of heat. If it is a short descent or not very steep, you can just put the transmission in 2nd or 1st and save the hassle of shifting the transfer case into 4-low. Otherwise, it is better to be in 4-low. With the vehicle in 4-low on a descent it is a good idea to put the transmission in 2nd or sometimes even 1st to keep it from up shifting and allowing you to go faster than you want.

Short version is... If you would use 4-low to get up it... use 4-low to get down it and downshift.

I wanted to go about 15mph.
I tried 4-low, 2nd gear, but as soon as you hit the accelerator to speed up a little the engine braking releases or it upshifts or something, and you start going too fast again unless you brake. Maybe that's how it's supposed to work. I don't know.

if you are going 15 down a normal dirt road, any high range should do.

if you are going to be idling around or climbing or descending a steep hill and want to go slow and have more control, low range
