Post subject:  Repairing rock rash on moab wheels

Forgive me if this topic has been discussed before. I tried to search and I didn't find anything.

I have some aluminum MOAB rims that have some rock rash on them. Is there a way to repair these myself? Can I use some sort of a rotary tool to sand/buff these gouges out a bit? Has anyone ever attempted anything like this before?

Thanks in advance!

All depends how deep the rash is! You may be able to take some sandpaper and sand them out then use finer and finer to bring it back to really smooth or you could sand most of it out and then paint them. But if its really deep just drop them off in my garage. I can get rid of them for you and you wont have to look at them anymore!

This is kind of a sensitive thing. once you start taking a die grinder or disc sander to your wheels, they're essentially destroyed. all factory aluminum wheels are clearcoated, and if you don't have the capability of re-clearcoating them, the first time they encounter salt in the winter they'll start corroding like crazy. I know there are shops in most major cities that will refurbish your wheels...but do you REALLY want that? I mean since you gouged em out already, you might as well leave em because it's inevitably gonna happen again.

This isn't a DIY type thing, basically. But, I totally agree with tommudd...if you want the rock rash to be gone, just drop the wheels off at my house:D

Rock rash adds character. The MOABS I got have a little rash on them, but you can't tell it from 5 feet away.
