nope I do have 4low still I just want 4full time - with the weather being as rainy as it has 4full would be nice. I might be able to get a t-case out of a broken down grand cherokee its a selec-trac NV242. It looks like a simple job but you never know. |

hmm not encouraging news is there a t-case I could swap out with the 4full mode that you know of? I know of a couple of KJ's that just went to a junk yard so if theyre set up I may be able to get all the parts from them |

A Grand Cherokee t-case might work, if you get a 27-spline slip yoke with it. The KJ has a 32-spline output shaft & slip yoke. I did a write up at KJ Country in the How-To section: http://www.jeepkj.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32339[/url] |

The Full Time case has had some failures. The Part Time case has had none. So some people have gone the other way around. I personally LOVE my Full Time 4WD. Whenever it's raining or snowing, I just throw it into 4WD and drive with confidence. |

I had been planing the swap for a couple years, but the reason that I finally quit procrastinating was because my command-trac crapped out! The NV/NP 242 is a very strong case & was used in the H1 Hummer... the big bad one that weighs ~6000 lbs, can climb 3 foot walls, 60 degree+ inclines etc... I have no worries! |

so would a 242 still fit or would I be changing half the drivetrain if I could find one of those? |

Sorry I got the #'s mixed up,the 242J is available in the KJ,but is a weaker version using 23spline inputs and 27 spline outputs. The 242AMG is a special built version for the H1's using 32slpine in/outputs and was only used till '95 then H1'a went to a much beefier 218AMG t-case.There are different version of the same t-case alot and made for different apps, they may have the same # but are much weaker/stronger depending on the application is was intended for.The 231J(or HD is offered) is a much stronger t-csae then the 242J t-case just you don't get fulltime 4x4 option.

so what would be the best recommendation transfer case wise to add to a a much beefier mod in the future the cough cough mod not sure I'll do that mod it depends on funds but as long as were swapping major parts out I figure a beefier transfer case would be a good addition - and I would like 4full |

Both the 231 I removed & the 242 I installed had 32 spilne output shafts. The WJ has a 27 spline shaft, but so does the WJ & XJ 231. My point is, I don't think the 242 case is a weak case. Especially when comparing a KJ 231 & a KJ 242, I don't think one could say the 242 is weak & the 231 is strong... And no one can say the 231 does not fail, there is a busted 231 with only 70,000 miles on the floor of my garage! |

I just ran out & checked, & It is a 242J. But I agree with you that there are going to be differences between cases with the same number, I am not arguing against that. Me & my KJ are currently in Cincinnati, so I can't check my WJ 242 part tag to see if it is a 242J, but I think it is, & it has a 27-spline output shaft. Like I said before the argument I am making is that the 242 is not a weak t-case as compared to the 231, and just like any piece of mechanical equipment, the 231 can & does fail. |
