So we've been thinking about getting a roof rack for our KJ, and were curious about how much weight our roof rails could support. We have an 06 Renegade, which means it has the larger silver tubes, instead of the standard small black ones. However, while they look beefy, according to the owner's manual, a standard liberty is rated for 150 lbs on the roof rails, but the renegades are only rated for 65 lbs. So, it seems like a waste of money to get a rack for the renegade rails. Has anyone with a renegade run into this problem? Can we switch out the rails for normal liberty rails? Or better yet, are there some stronger aftermarket ones available?

ARBSeth and others have built custom setups due to this problem. There are pictures of custom racks and design discussions in the archives.

You could get a custom one and have it bolt into the same spots the stock rail bolt into.

I dont know about how much the silver ones will really hold. They often under rate them for safety. I will bet the black ones will fit a new renny. Measure a black one and see if the mounts are in the same spot. I think you could get the standard black ones used off a wrecked libby or something. I have them on my 03' renny I will tell you they can hold well above 250lbs if your not bouncin' around too much. I have loaded 8 creek boats on it a few times. Creekers weigh in around 40-50 lbs each. So at the min I had 320 lbs on the roof rack. Plus when loading I had to stand on the rack to get the boats strapped down. To be safe if you had the black ones I think you could carry 200lbs no problem but the silvers may be able to hold more than you think. Testing them to see is kinda nerve racking though.
