Post subject:  UPDATE: Weird noise coming from front end...

Today after wheeling for about an hour I started getting some noise in the front, sounded like a "tink" over and over. Only really did it when I was going down a hill or when there seemed to be any kind of resistance (little bumps in the sand, etc) as soon as I took it out of 4WD it stopped. Is this my front U-Joint? I feel it is important for me to emphasize that it didn't make any noise for the first hour or so... When I went wheeling the first time I got the truck before it was lifted it did the same thing, was quiet for about an hour then started making these noises..

Edit: I should have added earlier that I had this noise before I lifted the truck as well... I /thought/ it was my lower balljoints so I got them done under recall... Nope :(

Never heard of a front U-joint problem. Did you check your CV boots and all that good stuff?

Nope... It was dark so I didn't really have time to check anything... I'll start there when I get the chance. I am not very mechanical literate so I wouldn't really know how to begin looking for the noise...

What do you have to look for when you check the CV boots?

Actually, he said it doesn't make the noise when he isn't in 4WD, so my quick fix would be: don't use 4WD :P

Look for tears or openings in the boots (yellow section), check the bands around the ends to be sure they're seated properly (green sections), look for signs of lubricant coming out of the boots. Be sure to check in the folds of the boots when checking everything out. Doesn't take a long time and if you do it regularly, say whenever you change your oil (if you do it yourself) you'll be able to spot any potential problems early on.

That has nothing to do with sounding like an a hole, you just inform people so they dont argue about things the liberty doesnt even have.

Not always, since you are lifted and by your sig your above 2 1/2" your front CV's are at a good angle just driving straight so they can make a "clicking" noise while driving straight.

Yesterday I took it to the dealer I bought it from and it turns out the front driveshaft needs to be replaced. That better be a warranty repair! 8)

It's related to the CV joint or whatever joint is used on the front drive shaft
