My step father is a mechanic but he refuses to touch any differential unless he has to. What price am I looking at here?

Are you serious about bringing your jeep to the dealer to get a locker installed?
That is probably the worst idea I have heard in a while

I would look for some shop other than them that will do it
or beg the step dad to show you and you turn the wrenches

what part of the country are you in?
Most major cities have a place that will do it for you

I'm in South Jersey... I don't have the cash for a locker yet but i'd like to get one.. I'm just trying to get an idea of how much everything is going to cost...

The cost will depend on the type of locker and how much work you are willing to do
"lunch box locker" or a power trax you may get one put in for ~$150-$200
a full carrier replacement type locker like a detroit will run you $50-$75 more
and an ARB will be tha same as a detroit if you do the compressor and swich work

That's uh... A lot cheaper than I was expecting... I was under the impression this was a tough job?

I've been quoted upwards of $800 for install only on an ARB. Differentials definitely take some experience to work on. Look around and find an independent shop you are comfortable with.

dude they were taking you behind the wood shed for sure
the shop that I have used did it in <4 hours with the copper fitting ready for the hose on top the diff

3.5 hours at $65 $227.50 + oil it was right at $250
$800 @ $65 an hour = 12+ hours for a locker install

The place that does my work said 8 hours to do an ARB in the front of the KJ including setting up new gears

Great... So i'm looking at about $550 installed then...

Is this the locker I want to get if I have the 8.25" + "Trac Loc"?

OK first what you should do is figure that a lunch box locker like that is made to do it in your drive way so it is easy
a shop should be in and out in ~2 hours what ever the shop rate is in your town X2 hours
so lets say it is out ragous and $100 an hour $225 would be about right

can someone who has very little technical no how install one?

that would depend on how little
I have never worked on gears/lockers and when I busted the copper air line on my ARB I was able to pull the locker
replace the lollipop and reinstall with NO issues yet and that was 6K miles and over a year ago

I however can install lifts and most any other components on a Jeep but can not do a tranny over haul
I would think that if you take your time and CAREFULY follow the directions you can do it

A lunchbox locker is not really all that difficult to install, however if you are not use to working on vehicle it could be quite intimidating.

As far as lunchbox lockers I'd go with the powertrax no-slip. Most lunchbox locker are pretty much the same, except the no-slip has some syncros and paddles to help make it more street friendly. However, alot of people despise lunchbox lockers for strength reasons (even though they are fine with a v-6 and 31-32" tires) and poor road manners. The other alternative are the Detroit tru-trac and the ARB air locker.

I have the no-slip and have helped installed quite a them for some board members . It does have some quirks, but for the cost, increased traction, and easy of installation, I think its a decent value.

I got mine off ebay over 2 years ago. I believe Rocky Road Offroad has them listed for the cheapest. Tellico 4x4 has them for a little more, but if you call and mention LOST they will give you a 10% discount.

Not to blab how much I detest lunchbox lockers but if you don't do alot of offroading you would be much happier with something like a Detroit TrueTrac,yes it's a LSD but the best one out there.It has awesome on road manners,can't even tell it's there until you need it.Also since it's gear based,no friction modifier needed and no clutches to ever wear out.The TT is only a little more than the powertrax and the install will cost a little more but I believe it is a better choice since you don't offroad that much.Depending on your area's labor rate you could have a TT installed for about $250-$350,probally only about a $100 more then a lunchbox locker.Plus you'll be getting a better,stronger unit,and with a little E-brake action you can fool the TT to act as a locker in the rear axle.Just my 2 cents.

Oh and why it costs more to install the ARB airlocker is they have to drill and tap the housing for the air line,also that in most cases includes the install of the compressor and running the airline.

Haven't read the whole thread, I am too lazy to do that. But from the first page, sounds like you have your mind set on the "lunchbox" locker. I've heard good things about the Powertrax. Can't remember which one, but you can only get either the NoSlip or LockRight for the KJ.... one of them isn't compatible with the 29 spline rear of the Libby.

They run like $300 CDN I think. If you have any mechanical know-how, they are pretty easy to put in everyone says. I wouldn't be scared to try it myself.

I'm with tjkj2002, if you're not going off road much you're just wasting your money and getting rid of some of the nice driving characteristics of your rig for no reason. Only install lockers on off road vehicles, stay away from them on daily drivers.
