Air Ride Suspension for street and Off road???

Post subject:  Air Ride Suspension for street and Off road???
New to L.O.S.T. and I can't get enough I have what may be a stupid question, or maybe I've watched one to many Automotive show on spike T.V. or the SPEED channel. I have seen them put air ride suspension on a Camero to improve it's handleing on the track after tweeking and tuning. Then I've seen older trucks with Air Ride setups to raise or lower a vehicle. Is it possible to get the best of both worlds with lower suspesions for street use and a Air Ride lift to improve clearence issues for off road??? :idea:
OR
Have I watched one too many James Bond movies to be thinking of this type of modifications??

I think it would be very possible, maybe not the easiest or cheap to set up but very possible. If I had a landrover junkyard to play with I would steal some of their parts to try to lower the expense. But if you have the money I am sure someone out there will build it for you.

I have airbags on the rear of my liberty, got them from summit. The way I have it setup, I can gain around 1-2in off-road by pumping them up.. I mostly use them for loads and things, not to gain lift.. I will pump them up some when Im offroad though..

I have no clue how you would do the front though.. :?

A true air suspension completely replaces the springs with air "bags" if you will. The rear would be no problem because the spring is seperate from the shock. The front however would be harder. You would have to make a shock mount somehow that would sit beside the air spring. Room may be the bigges limiting factor. Or you could use an air strut

A system like this is standard on RangeRovers and it is great, on road in low possition it gives good handling, off road on high possition you have bags of groundclearance and when you park it you lower it all the way down to step in and out more easy.
Downsite is when something brakes you end up limping home at 35 MPH in the lowest possition or stuck for ever when you are on a trail and repairs are costly.

I just fired an e-mail off to Airride asking if thery couldn't come up with the reliable air ride set up we have been discussing. If they couldn't come up with a system for those who have Liberties . Could they direct me to someone who would be willing to fabricate a reliabe system for all of us who nicer Jeep . Or do just start canibalizing every Rangr Rover already out there. Yes I was a little childish in my approach. :twisted: But I have yet to see a business person who if their is a way to make a buck. Will try to find a way to get the money of anybody the can hook. So we will see.
I'll keep you all posted. 8)

Of coarse like most of us it will be a little while till the OL' Piggy Bank will be fat enough for slaughter. But it is a goal. Why is this the ultimate setup? When it was tried on the Land Rover it bombed, when tried on dirt bikes it bombed even worse, and was a maintenance nightmare.
Seems to me it would be at best a compromise for us, lower it for street you have to run smaller tires, raise it and you had better pack your other set along. If it fails offroad your than stuck with a tire jammed wheelwell.

Ever want just a little more droop or a little more lift? Say you are climbing a steep hill or even coming off a ledge and you are hung up on your hitch...Just jack the back up a little and scoot right by.....Or going off camber downhill into a ditch and your right front suspension is compressed with your bumper against a rock, stump etc...You could just pump up that one side to clear the obstacle. Its not all about ride height...

EDIT:
You should have bumpstops that would keep your tire out of the wheel well to at least limp home in case of a failure.

YEP 8) I know a guy from a local club that has it & it is bad 8) he can go to about 10 inches of lift when all are pumped up it sits with about 4/5 inches of lift when deflated

Thanks to all of you!! This has been great and opened my eyes as far as new avenues to take my little beastie on it's next evolution. This info really has me stoked. Now I just have to start on a major fattening process for my skinny little piggy bank. We all have goals and now I have mine. It will take a while but when I do I'll be sure to make a full documantaion and pics to show this mod to my Liberty. I need to learn to walk before I can crawl and then crawl real good before I can ROCK CRAWL. {OK may I should have left that one alone. But I couldn't help myself :oops: } I will keep my eye's and ears open, I learn more and more every time I come to this site. Many THANKS again. :-)r
