Post subject:  Lift Install

I posted this in the NE section, but I'm hoping to get more exposure and advice this way.

I'm going to order some OME med. duty springs. While I'd love to install them myself, I have neither the time, nor the tools to do so, and finding a friend of mine w/ necessary tools who would also have free time at the same time I do is almost totally out of the question.

So, with a lack of 4x4 shops in CT, where do I get this done? and second, how much would I be looking at spending. (its already 200 for the springs)

If this is going to cost a whole bunch, I'll just get a flowmaster put on for around 150. Smile

either way, something is happening to this jeep! Twisted Evil

ya they aren't cheap to put on.. my friend spent about 1000 for his lift.. like 500 for rusty's and 500 for install

so i think its safe to say that it might cost around how much it costs for the parts

To give you what I think it will cost is very hard
Yes I did pay to have mine installed I know the guy who owns the place ,he lets me use the rack to work on my TJ
I am not allowed to work on the KJ :D as per my wife
he only charged me 2 hours shop labor but he also told me all the things that can go wrong and that next time he would charge some one
4 hours
the rear is VERY easy <1 hour in a drive way with a floor jack
the front is where the problems come in
you need a wall mounted strut spring compressor ,not all shops have 1
you also need to take care to not over torque the clevis fork bolts and break the cast clevis
when removing the struts you need to take care not to rip a CV boot
I forget what else he said but I am glad I let him fool with it

I would find a smaller "mom and pop" type of place stop in and talk with them about it see if they are willing to do it
if so then bring it to them dont just show up and try to have this done

also what will help a bunch is if you stay away from the word "LIFT" that scares shops
insted tell them that you need them to install new struts ,springs and shocks then it sounds like what they do all the time

I got two quotes locally for the job. Both were $250. One was from a 4x4 shop specializing in lifts and the other was from the local Big O tire dealer. Just about any shop that normally replaces struts should be able to do the job for you. I did run into two shops that had recently changed their policy to not installing any lifts. They both cited liability concerns. Their insurance carriers may have had some say in it.

That is amazing you have absolutely no time to do it yourself and get the needed tools from those that do have them. I guess you won't ever get to go off-roading since that takes a lot of time.

Perhaps you could pay some of the local KJ LOST members to do it but at a much lower price and provide munchies for them.

Of course, the high cost you will pay for a business to install it will most likely have a warranty.....you hope. Labor fees are definitely not cheap.

I did mine in one full day and it was the first time. Its really not that hard but time consuming and you dont need any exotic tools that you cant rent or borrow from Auto Zone. Figure a professional shop could do the install in 5 hours at whatever their labor rate is. Prob cost $300-$400 Im guessing...

I think the word "lift" is actually a bit misleading in this case. It really is just new springs.

tokyo joe--I really don't have time right now. with 2 jobs claiming 60+ hour weeks, I haven't been wheeling in a good while. BUT, for me, its about the look just as much as it is about the functionality.

So basically, I got to a Pep Boys-esque place and say I want my springs replaced due to the sag. I should expect the fee to be about 200-250 correct?

Yea something like that. I actually brought my new springs and strut assy to midas to have them compress it for me. Only charged me $30 for that service. Money well spent if youve ever tried to compress them yourself with the manual tool....

you are only replacing the springs?
Why not the struts and shocks as well?

NO not a chain they will rape you if they even do it
go to a small grage type place where you can talk to the guy who will do the work and it is not just some kid who knows how to turn a wrench
"Pep Boys" is the type of place that will screw your rig up and then say it is your falt ,great for getting tires balanced but that is about all

ok. thanks for the heads up about pep boys. I'll probably shoot down to one of the local garages, see what they say. ( One routinely has Unlimited Rubicons for sale, so I'd assume they have some jeep knowledge )

There was a 4x4 shop in east hartford that was going to do mine,I don't recall the name but it's in the phone book,I ended up doing my own ( rusty's coil lift ) and had a local garage compress the struts for $40..

according to what my boss looked up for me at work, it's about 3 or 4 hours of labor to replace all 4 shocks and all 4 springs on a Liberty. 4 times $85/hr (our labor rate...employee rate is different but that doesn't affect you guys:P) is $340. Tack on a basic alignment ($69) and you're lookin at a hair over $440 out the door, taxes and all.

GASP!

Well, looks like I'll just slap on the flowmaster for now, and then see what the Off Road Club at school can do.
