I am running a Rustys 2.5 coil lift. I was getting a clunking in the rear so I tried adjusting the door, that seemed to help a bit so then I figured I would get some Ranchos so I just tossed those on and am getting clunking....do I need to shim those as well? they seemed pretty snug to start with?

The holes have play unless you have the original shock size. You can cut a little piece of rubber hose to put inside the shock hole like another bushing. It might help to add a few washers on the sides too.

Good Luck

Did you install the spacers/washers that came with the rusty's kit?

the ranchos are wider then the rustys so the washers wouldn't fit...I'm thinking the clunk is something esle????

Hit your spare tire with you fist and see if it rattles. Sometimes the tire mount on the inside of the tail gate will come loose and rattle.

The adjustment on the gate that you adjusted was still rattling on mine after I adjusted it. I put some silicone on the adjustment and on the top of the window since it was making a noise when going over bumps and things. :)

My first XJ was an '85, changed it's own oil (another story).

at around 65,000 miles it developed a clunk in the rear end. I chased that damed noise for 50,000 miles. I replaced the rear shocks TWICE. finally on the third set of shock is disapeared. I could not believe I had TWO sets of bad shocks, but it happened.

I changed out the leaf shackles, bumpers, axle bearings, exhaust, you name it, U joints, Latch to tail gate... ALL OF IT but on the third set of shocks POOF it was gone.

I had the same problem after installing my RRO Rockfather I kit, all it took was new Ranchos and bang all gone. Sounds like a loose or bad shock. Just my .02 .

This may sound dumb but it helped me, open the gate and if you weigh enough try to bounce the rear and see if you can locate the noise. I know everybody is gonna flame me for it but it actually worked for me. Having a friend there will help even more.

no matter how hard i jumped on my XJ i could not replicate it either. only yht weight of the car and the violent jolt of a bump could do it. I had 3 other guys jumping on my bumper at the same time and no noise.

Get new shocks and see if that wont fix it.

I understand,

Just telling you it happens that the new ones could be bad. Took me 3 sets to get good ones.

On an 2002 if you haven't replaced the lower rear control arms yet, I'd suspect the bushings are worn.
