If you view the parts list on the right, then ring and pinion it shows all different gears for the d30. I wonder why when searching under liberty it brought me here? can we really not use these gears for a d30? the only difference that I know of is Aluminum, anything else?

They won't work,if you go to "view details" it list that they also work on all other D30's----http://www.ringpinion.com/DiffDetails.aspx?DiffID=12&PartsLink=PartCats.aspx%3fSearchMode%3dMake%26MakeID%3d7%26MakeName%3dJeep%2b%252f%2bAMC%26ModelID%3d385%26ModelName%3dLiberty%26Side%3dFront%26DiffID%3d12%26DiffName%3dDana%2bSpicer%2bD30%2bStandard%2bRotation%2bFront.

The main difference between the regular D30 gears and the one's for the D30A are that the D30A has a longer pinion shaft so the gear sets for a regular D30 won't work, sorry.

I am sure what you are saying is true. but I see that the liberty is listed as a compatible model.

The ONLY front diff you can gear dwon with at this time is the 4.10s that Mopar sells.

We're the ones that figured out they wouldn't fit. I bought them from RRO who sells gears from Randy's. After they sent me about 4 sets of ring and pinion gears for the front, and about 3 weeks of my KJ being out of commission with the front diff torn apart, we swapped in the front diff from a 4 cyl. If you go to their website, they are still listed even though they've known for years that they won't fit.

That doesn't mean much, alot of places list the KJ under there D30 gears as fitting but they don't,the ring gear will work but the pinion won't.You need to get the gears from a dealer or directly from Dana(or a wrecked 4-cylinder KJ).

I would say the longer pinion gear is another reason for the exploding diff. it creates more leverage for the pinion get to tear open the case.. Idk why an engineer didnt think about stuff like that. Why didnt they just use the Iron casing like the WK has and call it a day.

I got my 4.10s for the front here...

http://reiderracing.com/

You have to call them, they aren't on the website. About 1/3 what they cost from the dealer and these guys get them direct from Dana/Spicer.

I've had them in the Libby for over 8 months now. No problems at all.

Do you have part numbers? What did you pay? I priced out a front diff from the dealership last weekend @ $2200. (Yes, I know it's the worst route).

I got my front diff from a 4 cylinder for around $550, but that was years ago. My mechanic found it for me while we had the 4.10's in the rear, and had discovered the 4.10's for the front didn't fit, and neither did the 3 or 4 other sets of gears they sent. The dealership wanted $450 for the front ring and pinion alone. That didn't include a rebuild kit or installation.

actually on the contrary I'd imagine the longer pinion shaft more than likely HELPS in this situation because the load is distributed to a larger area on the case rather than the smaller area like that on a TJ or XJ's D30 front housing.

I can't say what I paid as it's not the real price. I was a guinee pig to make sure they'd fit and work.

Call em up and tell em you need the 4.10 Dana gears for the front of a liberty.
