Where is the fill hole for the automatic 45RFE transmission? I have the Haynes manual and it mentions a "filler tube". Where is this tube? I don't want to drain the tranmission before I find the fill up, that would leave me up a creek. Also I figured I had the 45RFE from searching here where it says 02's came with this tranny. I hope the # is right. Thanks |

As usual I got side tracked but I should have titled this how to make a huge red mess on the garage floor. It's draining the last out now and then I will refill. Why isn't there a drain plug on the tranny pain. Wouldn't that make it much eaiser? I mean put one of those magnetic plugs in to collect metal particles and you would be good to go...O well just venting. |

I have the 02 45RFE, Slowly through the tranny (back) dipstick hole with a clean funnel. Since you had to ask the question in the first place, I applaud you for jumping in there and gettin it done. BUT Don't put too much fluid in and give it a few minutes to ingest it. When you get it close, Crank her up, cycle it through the gears and back to idle with the e-brake on. If you did not wear rubber gloves, I hope you are done having children. It will absorb faster than a nicotine patch. |

It will absorb faster than a nicotine patch. I would still like to hear about your thoughts as to why the bees are all disappearing...very disturbing... |

jferg, Are you saying that if you let ATF absorb into your skin it will make you sterile? I didn't get a chance to hit the link before it was gone And Pookie, there's a sticker on the side of your transmission that will tell you whether it's the 45RFE or the 42RLE. if my KJ wasn't parked in a soggy part of the driveway, I'd go crawl out there and take a picture for ya |

All '02 KJ's have the 45RFE(auto's at least),they started putting the 42RLE in the KJ in May of '03.The 45RFE has 2 filters by the way,one looks like a oil filter. |

Well everything went well....except.... I got the old fluid out and the new in, I then took it for a drive. All good shifts fine. Blah, Blah. I'm was proud of myself, polished off a congratualtory beer and went to bed. Got up and there was a little puddle about 4-5" around. No biggie I thought I must have not tightened that one bolt enough. You can guess what happened. Bolt snapped. So I guess I will be repeating the process again. I just hope I can get the other part of the broken bolt out. That's what I guess for thinking I was done. |

I was out doing this on Sat which is what led to me wanting to change the fluid. I am going to do the diffs too and I already took care of my transfer case. Had I not broke the stupid bolt I would have been rockin.

Ok so I went by autozone to get the filter and gasket for the tranny. I didn't look at it when I left the store like an idiot (was at lunch and in a rush) but when I got back to work there are 2 filters in the box, and no gasket. There is one small mini oil filter and this other, goofy shaped filter. So now my questions are: Do I reuse the gasket I have? I have some high temp gasket sealant I can use if that is the option. When I am under there is it going to be self explanatory how the filters work? Any tricks I need to know? Here is my plan -remove non-broken bolts -drain fluid -remove broken bolt, tap if necessary -change filters (I hope) -reseal gasket with gasket sealant -reinstall cover and bolts -refill Sound about right? I also plan on refilling with new fluid as opposed to reusing what is already in there. I drove about 60 miles on the fluid I put in, which is no big deal, but I figured that would be a good way to get the fluid mixed with the other old that was in there and flushed out. Sound right? |

Sound right? you forgot to add drain plug to transmission pan. it's only a few bucks at autozone. as far as getting the bolt out, i've seen maintenance guys at work use an engraver to extract the broken bolt. this is done by using the tip of the engraver (while running) to back the screw out...i thought he was crazy too until i saw him do it. it would be worth a try if you have a dremel with the right attatchment.. |
