Hey,
I know it says in the manual to put it neutral and be rolling at 2-3 mph when shifting into 4-low. Does it matter what direction you are rolling? When I was up weelin' the other day I came up on a part of the trail that I needed 4-low in and had to turn around to shift into 4-low so I would be rolling forward. It would have been a lot easier to roll backwards. Is it ok to do this? Thanks in advance for the help.

I think it would be fine. You might be best off to put it in reverse and go at least a few feet then go to N. I have done it before with no problems, but maybe I got lucky?

Anyhow
I wouldnt go from drive to neutral then let it roll back and try to shift the transfer case.....you might get some cruching noises if you did that.

You are usually best to put it in 4LO as soon as you get off the pavement....unless you are doing something high speed like dune or mud running.

hhmmmmmmmm, all of the instances where i needed 4lo and i would be rolling backwards, i just shifted into 4lo standing still and it went right in... not sure if it matter if you are rolling forward or backward

If I need to go to 4 lo I stop and pull it back in, none of that rolling crap. You may need to move it forward just a little but have never had any trouble. In driving 4WDs for over 32 years I have never had to let one "roll" to put it in to 4 LO! Stop reading the manual so closely it was written by monkeys in the Toledo zoo, no wait Ive seen them, theyre smarter than that

Ok, thanks for the responses. Next time I'll just try shifting without rolling. It would certainly be easaier if it didn't make a difference if you are rolling or not. Thanks again for the help.

If it doesnt slip right in then gently roll just a little bit and it should slip in fine

I never roll. Put it into N, yank it, put it in 1 drive off.
How do they expect you to roll when you are stuck in a ditch? Yeah, it is good to roll so it gets aligned properly, but it is not a sin if you don't roll.
Just put back in Reverse, then Drive then N if it doesn't engage because of the aligned gears..

Go ahead, yank it!

I wouldnt shift your transmission through the gears if your transfer case is in neutral though...If you do that your trasmission will be spinning when your transfercase is not. If you dont make it into 4LO be sure to get back into 4HI before you put your tranny in gear. If for some reason if the transfercase gets stuck in Neutral you will either have to put your tranny in Neutral long enough for the gears to stop turning or you will have to shut off the engine with the tranny in gear then shift to Neutral. You just dont want you tranny output spinning at a different speed than your transfercase input while shifting the transfercase. You will know if it is though :x BZZzzzzzzzzzCRUNCH!

Well, you got it opposite I think. You put the transmission in N (not selec trac) then put selec trac to 4LO, then engage gear into 1.
I don't see why any gears would be spinning. They will start once you pull from N to 1 (and since 4LO is already engaged) it will be easier. I do it all the time jumping the curb when someone parks behind me. :)

Ok, cool. I always figured you had to roll but if no one has had any problems just shifting without rolling than I am going to stop rolling and start shifting :D

I was going with the scenario that the transfer case for whatever reason wouldnt go into gear...if that happens you dont want to put you tranny into gear or you could end up with some crunching if you tried to then put your transfer case into gear.

yeah, ahhh the crunch. :) so far I have only heard the crunch a few times (when I was a KJ rookie). I kept pulling the darn lever, and it kept grinding!!
I felt like I was on the manual and pressing clutch half way.

well one thing i noticed is when i was in 4lo i stopped put the tranny in N and tryed to get back to 2hi it wouldnt go so i put it back in 4lo then the tranny to D then got goin 3mph put tranny back in N while coasting 3mph and then it slipped right to 2hi. Also if i come out one day and it is pourin snow how should i get in to 4hi start it put it in N and pull it to 4 hi?

I never do anything special to put it into 4hi. If i need it I pull up on the lever and it goes right in, whether I am rolling (only up to 55) or stopped. You shouldn't have to put the tranny in neutral for 4hi it can be in any grear I believe.

yea the 4hi function is shift-on-the-fly up to 55MPH, so u just pull it up. no shifting into N

I must be running totaly different T cases than you guys
the 231 in the TJ will not go into 4lo with out rollin
the same goes for the KJ ,it has the case with the full time mode 232 I think
how ever I NEVER have problems with shifting out on the trail

it goes like this
at the trail head roll forward in D to 3-5 mph slip it to N pull leaver to 4lo slip bac to D roll a few feet then down to 1 and it stays there unless
1) I stop and leave the KJ or TJ
2) it is a very very steep muddy hill wich 99.9% of the time we are in the TJ then it is in 2 and some times on the revlimiter

then when I come off the trail it is back to 2wd and to do that I go back to the above process
it is much easier on your rig to put it into 4lo and 1 and leave it there if you are on a trail you can go slower and have better control
keep in mind my idea of a "trail" is probably different than yours but if you need 4lo some times then you should have been in 4lo from the trail head

That is not a good idea
if you put it in drive it will shift gears
shifting gears makes heat
heat kills the tranny

This is why people get the trany temp light
it has never happened to me

trick is to keep the transmission in 1. Even if you wanted to, you wont go fast...
