Hello All, Two weekends ago I went wheeling and took a dip in some water that was a little deeper than I would have liked. Yesterday, my rear started howling (most noticable between 45-50mph). Coincidence? Boy i'd love to think so. I'm going to check the rear fluid out this weekend, but if water did get in there does that mean I need to replace the ring and pinion or is there some hope? Thanks, Bill Update: As soon as I pulled the drain plug off the rear the fluid came pouring out. I was actually surprised that no fish came out with the rest of the fluid. In other words, there was lots of water. I put some synth mobil 1 back there and it's still howling... I've been told the noise is there to stay, is there any chance that over a period of time it will disappear or do I ultimately needs to replace the rear? |

Sorry, but someone with more knowledge will have to chime in about what might be done to save yours. I know its a little late but I was always told that if you went in to deep to change the fluid immeadiatly to get that water out of there as fast as possible. I just thought that this might be an opportunity for someone else who might not know that and it could save them some heartache and $$$ in the end. It obviously is a howl that you never heard before? I'd get that fluid out ASAP. |

Might want to also check the other components (engine, tranny, t-case, front axle) to see if water go into there. Obliviously if water got into your engine, it would be hydro locked and wouldn't start. |

Yeah I was planning on checking the front dif as well this weekend... I didn't think about the T-case or the trans though.. thanks! |

Good time to switch to all full synthetics.  I would pull the cover and inspect the gears. If they are not a mess then they should be ok with a fluid change. How many miles have you driven since taking your "dip"?

Hopefully it isn't a bearing. I would suspect the gears should be ok w/ that few of miles on them. Good luck. |

Clean out the rear diff at least and replace the fluid. Then see if the noise subsides...but do it ASAP

Well I just got back from extending the front/rear diff breathers and came across something a little un-nerving... the hose for the rear diff breather was split almost in half right where it connects to the fitting on the rear.. There isn't a doubt in my mind there's water in there now, we just have to rip it apart and see... I won't have time to get to it until saturday, but you can bet your rear (haha) that the truck is staying right where it is until then... |

aww, that sucks.. You could at least take the plug out to see if it looks milky so you wont need to ponder about it so much. |

I have had water flowing over the hood on entry to the water and was in water up to the base of the headlights with no milkshakes afterwards at all. I bet it is something not related. |

If you are the origanal owner it should have the 7/70 on it and just bring it to the dealer to get if fixed for free |
