I'm thinking about getting an older Jeep to complement the driveway and I want some opinions and shopping help. Let me know your thoughts...

That's a nice project Jeep you got o4liberty. Already have some nice black rims and a hardtop to boot. What needs fixin' on it?

WoodysKJ, if my wife liked Jeeping, I'd think about that. As it stands, I'm better off putting $10k into my own Jeep because it'll make it more comfortable for her to ride in. A CJ7, however, is definitely in my shopping aisle. Putting $10k into a CJ7 would give me a pretty decent one.

JeepJunky33, I'm not in the store yet, but I appreciate the offer. This purchase won't happen until, probably early next year some time. It revolves around my wife's job and the vehicle that she may need to drive. PM me a ballpark asking price and some specs on your YJ if my purchasing window fits in with your desires.

I like the 91-95 yj. Nice 4.0, galvanized tub and frame, and millions of things to do to it. I just got done an 89 YJ with a 4.3 CPI vortec motor, 700r4, HP44, 8.8, with coilovers. Nice to have solid frames and good bodies. I love my CJ, but more and more of them are rotting away now.

I have a cousin older then me who years ago purchased a army surplus Jeep back in the late 60's He went so far as to drop a rebuilt corvette engine 327 or 350 I don't recall but he took it to college in Boulder Colorado and had more fun then anyone can have and still have any clothes on . Now we are talking about many many moons ago. But the CJ or what ever model your playing with you have sooooo many optoins as to mod and thats more then half the fun. You own road warrior. Go out and PLAY   8)

This guy down the street from me has an old CJ just wasting away sitting in his driveway. I've been tempted to go hash out a price, even though its not for sale. Its an Orange Renegade I think with Half-doors and soft top. I've never seen it move ever.

As for a project jeep, I'd like to find an 03-ish 4 Banger Stick KJ and totally build it for straight trail driving. Strip it to bare essentials and, of course, do an SFA.

Not quite a daily driver I suppose but a little help from VW could fix that.

Had a neighbor YEARS ago just as i was turning 16 who had an old Willy's in his driveway with 4 flat tires and a rats nest in the carb. BRIGHT orange color with an industrial farm sprayer on the back and a bunch of counter weights on the front to keep it from popping wheelies.

Went over and offered him 500.00 bucks and i would pay the tow. he took my momey and said get ur tow truck. I showed up two days later with 4 tires and a buddy's truck and some chains to pull it down the street and he handed me my 5 Jefferson's back and said tack two more zeros on the end and come see me.

Old Fart found out what a RUNNING willies was going for and decided to screw the deal. I was about to kill him. My dad went and had a little "Chat" with him about teaching me how to not be a man and the he should respect the deal, but he was an old time Richard and would not budge.

I was pissed.

Car was sold to a collector that week who showed up with a flat bed 5 days later and i watched as it rolled down the street.

My brother has 1975 CJ5. Its got a fiberglass tub on it. Its got the 3 speed tranny with a 304(mild cam). He bought it for just over $3k. Its not the nicest thing out there but MAN it's fun to drive.

Id go for a CJ just to have a V8.....drill some holes in the floor, then Rhino line it, get some vinyl seats, and it would never have a top on it....thats my idea of fun.....

That's a very serious consideration. There was a 1980 CJ7 Renegade for sale at a high-mileage lot near me a year ago for about $6000. It looked and ran like it did right off the lot. Beautiful. No a speck of rust. Didn't buy it though 'cause I was buying the Miata for my wife.

Now it's a possibility that I might be selling the Miata and buying an older Jeep. Life's funny like that sometimes.

you're a long ways away but, for $6000 I could walk across the street and pick up a really nice TJ or YJ. If you can find anyone willing to sell a CJ, they generally go for around $3500-4000, depending on condition. And often they will already have some mods: body lifts, rails, lockers, you name it.

Oh, I know. A vehicle on a high-mileage lot (also called "Sandlot" in the automotive sales world) with $6000 written on the windshield is always, at best, a $4000 vehicle. The fact that we were buying the Miata wasn't the reason I didn't buy it for $6k. It's the reason I didn't offer him $4k for it.

It sure was pretty though. :-)

IMO the 258 is better than the AMC V8's. More reliable, more longevity, more main bearings, more low end torque, and insignificant differences in horsepower. If you want a Jeep with a V8, swap in a GM 350. Also, CJ5's are ablast, I can drive mine through an old growth forest pretty much following a game trail...I am continually amazed at the places I can get that Jeep to, its like driving an ATV, except its a JEEP!

I heard that a long time ago about the 258s being better than the AMC V8s, but I had forgotten. Thanks for reminding me. I'll put it on my shopping checklist.

I love the CJ5s too, but I would have to have, at the very least, the room offered by a CJ7.

The TJs are capturing my attention the most right now. Looks like I can get a relatively low-mile 99 for a little over what I can sell the Miata for.

But everything else is still in the store that I'm walking through.

Yeah, In a perfect world I would add a TJ to my collection, and build it to suit me, which would not include the capability to explore lunar rock fields like many people desire , I just need just the essentials.... I figure by the time my CJ5 kicks the bucket TJs will be around to be purchased at "project" prices. I still cant believe they replaced the I6 with a V6 after the TJ. That is anti-progress IMO.

oh yeah, 258 blocks can be found by the hundreds across the country. really easy to work on too, as are all of the old "mechanical" jeeps. I have a buddy who acquired enough of them that he keeps a beater CJ7 (by beater I mean like stress relief or anger management after work LOL) and just swaps out the block and lower end with a rebuild he keeps on the hoist. Wrenching on CJs is his hobby, I like to roll around the farms and backcountry in mine, with minimal breakage. More wrenching = less Jeepin'

I hope you find what you want, as long as it is a Jeep!
