Post subject: | Lockers for Rear end of Liberty |
I'm starting the process of looking serious into a locker for the rear of my Liberty. I don't want to go as far as a ARB, don't want to bother with a compressor or plumbed CO2 tank. So are the following lockers the only choices I have? Detroit True Trac (Is this model made for rear?) Powertrax No-slip Auburn I'm pretty good with mechanics and want to install the locker myself. I wonder how it will effect the every day driving characteristics, especially in the winter (Northern Utah weather). I'm the only one driving my Jeep so I don't worry about the better half. I've also seen a post about not installing the Powertrax with a manual transmission. Has there been any progress to find the problem there? What do you recommend? Thanks, Ron |

Of those three you can't beat the Powertrax for use offroad and ease of installation. Like you though I have winters to contend with so I went with the Auburn. I have a writeup in the tech section if you want to see what the install is like. When I installed the Auburn they didn't even have the Detriot True Trac for the rear, but it is available now. I've heard that it doesn't provide quite the performance of the Auburn, but may last a little longer. This is just what I've read. I can tell you that my Auburn has worked flawlessly since the day I put it in. You'd never even know it was there until you need it. 30,000 miles on it so far and I haven't noticed any performance deterioration. |

With the Stick tranny the ARB might be the best bet out there. You could also use a VEY small tank and it would not be a problem. Hope that helps. later...Clint |

That's good info. The Auburn is supposed to transfer power even with one wheel off the ground. I guess that would be the biggest performance difference. |

The tru trac WILL transfer full power with one off the ground as long as you modulate the brakes. I've done it with my truck. Automatic trans though...not as easy with a stick. |

I love my powertrax. I have a trutrac in the front of my discovery and it sucks compare to this powertrax, like the1jferg says you have to tap the breaks to get it going sometimes, harder in a manual. Now for a manual I am not sure a powertrax is a good option though. I believe someone had problems with it and went to an Aurburn LSD. Yet to test it in winter, but I think Troyster has had his during last winter. Easy install by the way, if your in Utah I'd be glad to help. |

Even the "Trashlock" will transfer power if you use the brake. That wasn't my point. The Auburn transfers power even when the loose wheel has zero traction. It's by no means a locker, but you don't have to apply the brakes either. |

Hey SkyJump, See up there where I said "I Agree"? If he had an automatic, I would agree to disagree. Does that auburn put out Locker performance with one wheel off the ground? I'm not familiar wit it. The true-trac will give you full power with brake modulation. |

Hey man, I know you said you agree. I was just talking about the wheel off the ground/brake trick thing. No biggy. Like I said, the Auburn is no locker, but it works great for my puposes. You just don't have to use the brake to engage it in that situation. |
