stacking rear coil spring isolators

Hi--

I need a hair more clearance in back to clear my 245/70r16 Grabbers on 16x8 cragars. They just kiss the flares at the top middle.

Is stacking 2 extra rear coil spring isolators (for a total of 3 on each side) a good way to accomplish this?

Rear Bumpstops would be better. You add them to the bottom of the spring perch and limit the compression. The good part is you will keep a bit more ground clearance since the rear won't compress so much.

www.boulderbars.com sells some with the OME springs and they probably sell them separate. A 4WD store in your area will probably also have something that works...it will be shaped like a hockey puc and attach on the bottom of the spring perch so the upper stock bumpstop contacts it under compression.

You could always do both. I highly recommend only using one extra spring isolator though... I have two on mine and the one is starting to get pushed out

i recommend three spring isolators on each side.

i run this set up and it has worked perfectly. no issues in the past two years.

Are they rubbing at flex? Idk if the spacers would help with that or not.

The rear tires hit when they bounce going over a bump when I'm turning, like making a turn into a parking lot with a steep ramp.

Will 1" of lift help or am I better off with the bumpstops?

If you have 245/75s, the extra inch won't help. I literally have about .25" of clearance all around when my rear tires are stuffed with my setup...

The rear bumpstop will actually help in most situations...remember it does not limit articulation on the opposite side on the axle ... AND ... I have found with TOO MUCH COMPRESSION on one side I actually lose some ground clearance I have needed. I have had the sliders/shock mount/ect hang up on the low side. The bumpstop will also keep your rear shock from compressing too much (bottoming out). If you still rub after adding the bumpstop, then you can add an isolator or two.

With those wheels (16x8) you still might need to trim...depending on the Backspacing. It is the width that is causing you problems.

So youre stock? If you lifted the rear 1in and not the front, your Jeep is going to look and drive really strange.

I say lift both the front and rear alittle and be done with it.

Youre going to get serious rub in the rear at flex no matter how much you lift it though. I have OME HD coils on the rear and get rub at full flex without extended bumpstops. You could get some and cut them down to where they need to be. That way you dont limit to much flex.

I actually am having the exact same problem on mine (stock isolator + 2 extras).

Of course, it doesn't help that I last weekend I was doing trails #4, #5, and #6 at Tellico, NC as part of the Jeep Jamboree there. :lol:

I am debating removing one set...

Thanks for the excellent feedback.

The tires are 245/70r16, not 75 series. You are right--its the 8" rims with 5" BS causing the issues. I kept the stock rims just in case I want to go back.

I wouldn't really be lifting the rear, just leveling it. For whatever reason mine sits a little low in the rear. It doesn't matter though since you have convinced me that's not the way to go.

I really don't want to lift it. I can't afford it and for my needs it would be overkill. That's why I stuck with 245/70r16.

I have actaully solved most of the problem by trimming and rolling up the sheet metal.

I also figured out that the tire shop put 40 + psi in the tires. I aired down to 32 PSI and it seems to have made a big difference. The tires don't rebound as much and seem to clear the flares except on the biggest bumps. I actually have to try and hit a bump at speed to get them to hit so I think I'm ok. The only problem is that the tires are a little louder and I might lose some gas mileage. I used to run my XJ 30x9.50's at 32 PSI with excellent results so it should be fine.

I think I will install the bump stops anyway to be safe. Most of the off road driving I do is on the beach where the ruts from larger trucks require good articulation, and I often have a load in the back.

What brand bump stop do you recommend? Daystar?

By the way, in spite of the rubbing I LOVE the tires and wheels. The Jeep handles 100% better. I realize most of what I didn't like about the Jeep was caused by the Goodyear ST's. What was Jeep thinking?

It also went from "cute" to sinister since it is now black with black wheels (no center caps) and black side out on the tire.

Wet traction is superlative and ground clearance is visibly improved. For the 1st time since I bought it I don't miss my XJ.

Now I need to order a full size spare on a matching black wheel.
