Post subject:  Problem with 4WD (UPDATE!)

I just installed a Frankenlift last weekend. Everything was working great. Today we had a little ice on the roads here and I shifted into 4HI (25 mph in a straight line) and I heard clicking coming from underneath somewhere up front. I kept going straight for about 50 yards to see if it would go away. It didn't. I even went into 4LO and heard the same thing. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I am still runnning the stock tires and rims until I get an alignment. As soon as I go back to 2HI the clicking goes away. Any suggestions as to what it coud be? :? I forgot to mention I have the Command-Trac Part time 4WD system.

I did a little more investigating. It definately seems to be associated with my front driveshaft. It doesn't click when I coast in 4HI but when I press on the accelerator it clicks. It speeds up as I speed up.

Look at the front drive shaft and see if there is any weeds or limbs wrapped up on it.

Sounds like a bad CV. That's what I had with the Skyjacker kit. I think some CVs are not built to tolerances and for an unfortunate few a lift really accentuates the problem. Replaced mine when I installed the Frankenlift and have never had the problem again.

Find a steep hill where you can engage 4 wheel drive. Does the noise get louder going up and softer going down? If so, I can almost bet it is your CV. Try it out.

If it is a bad CV. Would this be a warranty issue? Or because I lifted it would I be out of pocket for this? Skyjump what was your situation?

Thanks

I never took it to the dealer because I assumed they would not warranty it (even though I knew the CV must have been bad before the lift). I got a CV off of www.car-part.com. It cost me $150 for a joint with 5,000 miles on it. It came with a 90 warranty and I installed it myself. So overall it was not a huge expense or hassle.

Edit: If you do go through the dealer expect them to quote you over a grand for the CV (parts only)! Crazy.

How much of a pain was it to install?

I have an appointment here in Iceland at the Mercedes Dealer (No Jeep dealerships) to see if they are going to cover it under warranty and to make sure that is the problem. If they don't cover it I will go that route as well.

It only took two hours. As long as you have the tools it isn't difficult. I'm lucky enough to have a friend who's a mechanic.

If you did your lift then this requires a lot of the same work.

Yeah we did the lift. I am on a military base and have access to an auto hobby shop with almost anything you need. I will give them a call and see if they have a knowledgeable person just in case they come back and say no on the warranty thing. Again this is all as long as they don't think it is something else.

I just got back from the dealer. (Mercedes Service Dept here in Iceland.)
They just ordered me a new Trasnfer Case. :? They said that was my problem. They did not say a word about my lift and everything is covered under warrenty. :D

Good for you!!!!

That is awesome.

Just do not tell them it is lifted... Afterall they are Mercedes techs not Jeep techs
