Post subject:  Rear Axle Damper Removal

After having beat the heck out of the rear end of my KJ on trail #6 at Tellico, I notice that I am getting rubbing between my rear axle damper (know in engineering circles as a "torsional vibration damper" or colloquially as "donkey balls") and rear stabilizer bar.

Know I know there has been talk about removal of the sway bar, but what about the axle dampers? Especially after having put a lift on?

Anyone?

Took mine off over a year ago,and the rear sway bar, can't tell any difference from when they where on.No funny vibs from the rear or nothing.

That's what I thought. Off it comes (and saving a little more weight). Thanks, TJ. :D

I thought it may help protect the back of the pumpkin. It does look like extra junk. Thought about getting a new drive shaft to eliminte the damper on that too.

Neither of my KJs have them. I bent the hell out of it in Moab one year and went to put the rear sway bar on to tow my trailer from Moab to the Grand Cyn and it wouldn't fit it was bent so bad. I went ahead and removed them and never noticed a problem. So, when I got my wifes KJ one of the 1st things I removed after the rear bar was the vibe dampner off the rear diff.

Just a word of caution, just because a few of us have good luck and don't have any vibes from removal of the vibe damper does not mean that evryone will be vibration free, every rear end is setup differently and every driveshaft is different.Just thought I would throw out that info so if you remove and you start getting vibe's please put it back on.

Thanks for the heads up.

I already have a little bit of a vibe right now due to some worn u-joints on hard acceleration. They have 96k on them and are original! Gonna replace them, test drive, then pull the dampner this weekend. If i have any vibes i'll throw it back on.

Everyone so far says they have not noticed a difference with the rear sway bar removed. If that's the case that's coming off also.

X2 - removed it about a year ago (just because it was in the way and hit the rear swaybar ...) - no vibes :P

Point well taken.

I did remove mine this weekend and have noticed absolutely no difference. 8)
