I think there maybe an issue with my 4 low. If anyone can chime in and let me know if this is normal please let me know.
Before decending a steep gravel and rock strewn path I engaged the 4 low and switch into 1st(Auto trans.). Halfway down the hill it seems like it changed gears on me cause the jeep lurched forward and began picking up alot of speed. Also the instrument panel still said I was in 4 low and it didn't dropped into N. I can't recall if the rpms changed but I'm going out tonight to try to replicate it.
Might it have jumped into 2nd?

this shouldnt have happened. im not even sure what the lurching could have been. mine holds 5mph when going down a hill, sometimes itll go up to about 7mph, but it has never shifted whilt the tranny was in 1

Happens in mine when going down a steep hill.

Idk if it has something to do with the engine programming or the crappy 42rle. The 45rfe in our WK doesnt do it, but it has a different engine.

Older KJ's have no problem with engine compression braking. Newer transmission can't do compression braking worth a darn ...

Mine is '05 and that is exactly what's happening. You have to keep one foot on the brake when going down steep hill.

Maybe the hill wasn't steep enough? :-)r

Actually what happens with my 42RLE KJ is it would hold speed for a while, but there is a point at which it would get faster, and faster, and faster, and all of a sudden it would let loose and then it's like a bat out of hell downhill. Just like the original poster said.

I haven't gotten out and measure how steep is "steep enough" but it doesn't happen all the time, that's for sure.

Yea, it takes a fairly steep hill to make it do it.

Never had it happen to our '03
now we dont have real long steep down hills but we have some VERY steep hills and it has never jumped
or any garbage like that
I have had my TJ jump out of 4lo to neutral but that was back when I was teaching the transfer case what it was there for
30K and never left 2wd

There is a trail here in Colorado called redcone. I have not been on it, but have seen it in a video from "pass patrol." If that were to happen to you on that trail (looks like straight down, nothing on the side but cliff. several roll overs) you probably bought the farm. Speeding up?-that is scary on any trail...

Sort of like Lion's Back?

That's one trail I will do when the kids graduate from university, have no more debt to pay, etc. Just in case :)
