What kind of damage would occur If i ran stock ratio in the front diff. and 4.10's in the rear?

also will any chrysler 8.25" axle ring and pinion fit ours?

ive read that you would have the front tires not turning at the same time as the rear, or vise versa.

that could lead to all kinds of nastiness.

Don't even think about it :!: Both have to be the same ratio.

If you don't have the front and back gears the same ratio, the wheels will turn at different rates, probably damaging your xfer case, transmission and differentials.

If you do it just get ready to be towed home with a torn up front diff, transfer case and maybe trans, if thats not a problem ...go for it!,

dropping out the front diff is no biggie, so drop it out take it to someone and have them set the new gears up for you and pop it back in.

Hood did you get your new tires yet? I'm guessing that's why you are looking at the 4.10 gears...help the 3.7 turn those 32" 's!
If you have the greendiamonds lets see some pics!

I'm getting ready to change mine, and put ARB's front and back. Labor estimate range from $700 to $1000 for both ends and 1 to 3 days in the shop. Every estimate is for removal of the front diff for regearing and install of the locker. Haven't found anyone willing to try to change it "in the vehicle".

I'm going with $1000, 1 day in the shop and very impressed with the quality of their work. Don't want to have to do this again :D

Changing the front without pulling it would be close to impossible. Dont you have a spare? Have a shop put in the ARB and gears and then you can swap out the diff

Yup got this really nice one packed in a box of $50 bills :D The labor is pretty much the same for R&R, but I save some shop time by taking the spare front diff to them in advance. They can get it built and ready and get me in and out in a day. I thought about installing the front diff myself, but once they put the 4:10's in the back, don't think I want to drive it home with 3.73's up front.

I know that N.O. is 3 hours for you and staying for a day or 2 would suck but I know a guy who will install for about $200
per axle + gear cost
you remove the front diff. and bring it to him with gears and $200 install
you bring him the whole rig and $200 rear install
unless his prices have gone up last time I was there this was about the cost
I am getting a detroit installed by him next week so I can tell you what that cost and I will ask abut the install if you want

I would be willing to help you pull the diff on a sunday ,say after a trail ride
you drive home with no front diff
I drop off the front to have it regeared on monday
you come over EARLY on a friday and drop off your rig for the rear to get done
we install the front that afternoon
and go ride on saturday

Something would break.

Be it the front diff, one of the drivelines, tcase, something would give.

That would be like getting new shoes and getting different sizes. Say you wore a 10, you couldnt get a size 5 and a size 10.

Jason- that is a very real possibility. If I can somehow swing 2 weekends in a row off at the marina. Im going to check prices locally to see if I can find anything reasonable. I may also try to work up an ARB to throw in the rear while we got it torn apart.

You CAN drive around with different ratios in the axles. But you CANNOT engage 4wd at all. You could always pull the front driveshaft out to make sure nothing goes wrong. You are in rear wheel drive in 2 hi anyway. There are guys on the Wrangler boards who do that sort of thing a lot. Sometimes they pull the rear shaft and put it 4wd, essentially making it front wheel drive.

Do they leave the gears at two different ratios permanently? What's their thoughts behind that?

The only time you can really do that is if you mud bog for example, with a high horsepower rig you want the front tires spinning at a higher speed so have different ratios front to rear, even different size/ tread tires, other than a mud pit you would be in trouble! Plus as soon as you hit the other end you unlock before turning/driving. People drive around like that only if they are waitng to put other gears in etc not all the time,

Yep that is correct, when I mud drag raced I ran 34" tires in front and 33" tires in back, then switched to Boggers(33") all around and ran the front at 30psi and the rear at 10psi.

All 4wd vehicles have different gear ratios F/R,like mine with 4.10's,the front gear ratio is actually 4.09:1 and the rear is 4.10.

I talked to the guy today
$250 labor for the rear in the jeep
$250 labor for the front you pull it

if he has to pull it then it could be several hundred more
he has never pulled the front diff from a KJ so he does not know how long it takes

note that it is labor only and no parts other than oil and RTV
