 Post subject: T-case ID and Bearing kit

Ok, I need to ID my T-case. There was a heated debate on here about the types of t-cases available for the Libby, and for some reason I can't locate it. I do seem to recall that the NV-231 command trac only has 2Hi, 4Hi and 4Lo and is designated as Part-Time 4-wheel drive. These are the selections in my '03 Libby Sport. Problem is the t-case has a distinct metal on metal sound when in either of the 4x4 options. The sound is not present in 2 wheel.

I have had it in the shop for other repairs and asked the mech. to see if he could determine the other problems. Apparently the t-case fluid has a burnt smell to it. The grinding nose was identified as the bearings on their way out. They can get the bearing kit, but at a large markup. I've searched around and found a kit for $89 + $20 shipping, I just don't know if it's the right one.

Anyone have any idea's on this, or perhaps where I could find decent bearing kit? If I go with the rebuild from the shop, I may as well just purchase a new t-case from the dealer. If I can't find the parts, yea, it's going to be that expensive.

Could just be excess slack in the chain. I haven't really messed with 231s much, but I think you can adjust the tensioner on the 231 and 242. tjkj oughta know

If you have

You have an NP231 Just like any other TJ or YJ or XJ and most other Jeeps
with that shift patern

If you have
2wd
4hi PT
4hi FT
N
4lo
You have an NP242 no question or doubt

Now the easy thing to do is to go out side
Lay on the ground
Crawl under your Jeep
Look where the rear Drive shaft goes into the Transfer Case
There will be a red Tag to the left side of the case it will ,99%, read New Process gear in the red area
and stamped into the tag it will read
NP231 or NP242
under that it will read
2.72 (or some thing like that 2.7?)
