This is a question that requires descriptive and factual accuracy. If I have my 4x4 with selec-Trac park on the concrete pad under my car port, which is the fastest and best method of getting from 2WD to 4WD? Can I just putter out on the mud at 5 mph and pull it into part-time of fulltime 4WD? Is it that easy? Do I have to let up on the accelerator and then step on it to engage 4WD, and can I just go right to fulltime--pulling right past part time 4WD. Anyone with the power of description want to try to tell a 4x4 virgin how it all works? Best, Billy |

1. Crank it up 2. Put it into reverse. 3. put it into 4 wheel part or full time. 4. Back on out enjoying your awesome traction. This is what I do. |

According to what I've seen and done. It is best to put it in any of the 4wd options when moving forward. Let up on the accellerator, pull it into your 4wd selection, then press gradually back on the accellerator and off you to. By putting in into 4wd and backing up, you may not actually get it locked unless you are parked and in neutral going into 4lo. This is from what I've gotten from personal experiences and also the when I have looked at the owner's manual. Good Luck. |

I like Edwin's method if it works with no harm to the t-case but the 1calkid has a good point about the manual. If Edwin's method works in practice it sounds like what I need because I pull into my carport forward and need to back out--and if its raining--like it is in Hondo right now, I'm surrounded by mud. I think if I came home and expected rain I might back in. In that case could I just crank up my Libby, put in it drive, select part-time 4WD and proceed to "enjoy my wonderful traction?" Its muddy today so I am going to try practcing on shifting into and out of 4WD on my little 5 acres on heaven. In trust of reason, Hoover |

I am not going to try Edwin's "starting in 4WD in reverse gear today. If anyone knows if shifting into 4WD while parked, then putting the Jeep's gear in reverse and backing up is harmful, please let me know. I will wait to hear from a couple of you before trying to engage 4WD at a stop and then backing up. I'm new to 4WD and love my Libby so please leave a message if you know anything about this Still a 4WD virgin but anxious to pop my cherry. Hoover |

Yes you can! lets say your driving in 2 high and get stuck (snow,mud,incline ect) you can just pull that lever into 4wd part time,or 4wd full time it doesn't matter if you are in park,reverse,drive as long as you speed is under 55 mph. to shift into 4low you need to be in neutral and it helps if you are rolling 2-3 mph. |

u can shift at any time under 55, that is a fact. But!!, one problem i have noticed is, sometimes if u put it into 4wd, and start spinning right after u put it into 4wd, the t-case will THUMP into 4wd. Ive had this happen a couple of times and im sure its not good on anything. The best thing to do is to put it into 4wd and drive alittle without letting the wheels spin, then do what ever ur wanting to do. |

You are all correct. I backed out of my driveway in 4wd Fulltime yesterday. I was anxious because I had never tried it before. Now my cherry is popped I'm ready for some rain so I can go muddin" Scoob |

No sows nest yet Edwin but it is supposed to rain tomorrow so maybe then. Thanks for your advice as my shifting worked acording to your 1 ,2, 3, 4, plan. I have five and a half acres at my home in the country (Medina County TX) to turn into a muddy mess. Saturday I will try to create a nice pig swallow wid me Jeeep!!! The gimp is feeling macho and the KJ makes it so! |
