THE 4.1 means 4:10 gears, the diff is probably the Chrysler 8.25

may not be an 8.25 as some of the ones (or maybe all) that were exported had Dana 35s I think esp back in those early model years, may want to double check, this is just from talking to some of the ones who built them

Yup, that's what I thought also. The D35 with 4:10 gears. I have never actually seen one and they could have changed it I suppose. The axle should have a tag on it too (drivers side) showing both axle model and gears.

I thought all 4 cyl had the 35s as well until I ran into this one in a junk, whoops recycling yard and they said they had one with 4.10s in the back, thought I had found my source for 4.10s!! front diff was gone, motor/ trans there, rear axle bent

That was very interesting I will have to study it , but I have one little peice of confision as I have heard I think that the Dana 30 and the Dana 30A have the same cover . How does one tell the difference, I beleive from what I have read their is a big difference in the 2 I think. Also I think I've seen some one using one diff in the rear and a different one in the front. Why doesn't this cause a conflic?? :? :? :?

There are multiple versions of the dana 30. The one our KJs and the KKs have is the Dana 30a. It has an aluminum housing and a longer pinion. All KJs and KKs come with this diff in the front. Some KJs have had a Dana 35 in the rear. These look very different from the 8.25 that most KJs and the KKs have. A Dana 35 is round whereas an 8.25 is has a flat bottom. Also it turns out some '02 South American KJs came with a Dana 44.

hi again!
i got my diff guard and it doesn't fit!
so i guess i can't have a 35. the diff cover is round and looks like a 35 cover, but the diff casing (aluminium) is flat on the bottom. so do i have a chrysler diff? the only tab on the diff just has 4.1 on it.
i don't think i have a 30 as the cover does not look at all like it does on this link (from bugnout)
http://truckparts-specialists.com/catal ... -guide.htm
would anyone (who knows what axel they have) like to take a measurement for me, from the lowest (& center) bolt up to the next one and then again to the next, like in an arc starting from the lowest (& center) bolt. in metric if possible. then i would know if i have the same axel and which it is.
i guess if the kj was never fitted with a dana 30 then i must have the chrysler 8.25 or?
help much appreciated
jonathan

Your talking about the back right? dana 30 is a front not rear. if its flat accross the botton its the 8.25 even though the cover is pretty round. A dana will had a d35 stamped on cast of the differential.
