I tried to BUZZ across an intersection on a wet road. My tires started to spin and the ESP computer slowed my engine speed to a slow crawl. I poked across with 55 mph on coming traffic..........................Everything turned out OK. I turned around, went home and changed my underware and then went to work. |

Most of the time ESP will help you...but when it is wet or you have to race into traffic...hit the button on your steering column and turn off ESP. In the wet, if you have Selec-Trac, it helps also to use Full-Time (with CRDs because of all the torque we almost have to) |

Thanks for the tip. I will try a couple of dry ( or should I say wet ) runs with ESP off...................... Marko |

o yea... its a scarey system. it can be even worse on trails with slick mud becasue the stability portion of the system dosent really turn completely off, its "relaxes" a little bit... |

you might want to also rethink your driving habits. having to gun it to get across an intersection without getting hit whether the roads are wet or dry isn't really the best idea. |

My ESP without fail tries to kill me at least twice daily. My problem is the clover leaf style off ramps. Before the lift and tires never saw it come on once. Read an article on a Jeep Commander buildup in 4 Wheel and Offroad Magazine. They used an inline module from AEV to correct their ESP problems. Module is listed as for Commandes and Grands. Because of the holiday I haven't been able to reach AEV to see if it will also work on a KJ, will try tomorrow and let everyone know. https://secure.aev-conversions.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=30406001AA |

This is the reason I hate drive by wire! and why I HATE when electronics try to think to much for me. My KJ doesn't even have ABS and I am completely happen with that. Glad it all worked out for you! stephen |

LOL guys! In the wet my GF thinks my KJ is a killer. In the "not-very-pleasant" way, that is. I get it to kick out with the back so easily, some times even unintentional (yeah yeah I know, keep the darn foot of the funny pedal in corners) - and every time she wants our old Patrol back (it was an SWB and had an ancient diesel with much less torque than the CRD). I just think the CRD is a lot more fun to drive She just never got used to me playing a bit with RWD only - even though I always tell her that I am in control |

same thing happened to me this morning. Hadn't rained in a while and it was drizzeling all night. I made a turn onto the open road at normal speed, shifted to second and accelerated and my tires started spinning and i did a full 360. luckily there was no oncoming traffic. Time to be more careful i guess. |

I don't know how ESP would have affected you here... Sounds more like it is related to your limited slip. Then again, I'm not too familiar with how ESP works... |

You dont have ESP... The esp would have kept you from doing that 360 though. |

That used to happen to me in my Jetta. Man that's scary! In the unESPed KJ though, the scary part is tapping the long-skinny pedal when trying to accelerate up an acceleration ramp. Man that tail end wants to get happy. Full time 4 has been used EXTENSIVELY in this truck! I am, however, happy to not deal with ESP anymore. As nice as it was in slick situations, it bogged me down in high-traffic conditions too much. |

@daspes: hi, I started a topic about the ESP + lift/tyres issues you mentioned here earlier, in case somebody might be able to contribute to this discussion... You see I'm getting ready for a Frankenlift myself, so I try to be as prepared as possible X. |

In a straight on wet situation turning ESP off does give me more control. Thanks Again............ |

We just had pretty bad weather last week when that snow storm blew through, even though there was only 3" I guess it wasn't really a storm. within 30 min of the start there already four different accidents along a 5 mile stretch of highway(I was on the opposite side). Anyways, I've just left the Jeep in 4WD the whole time. I figure I got the option I might as well get my moneys worth! I still haven't figured out the ESP and how it changes the handling. But whenever I doubted the handling I threw it in 4WD and loved it. So is it better to turn the ESP off if it's slick out? |
