Post subject:  Rear Drive Shaft
Well i was getting a nasty vibration from my jeep lately on the highway at about 70-80mph. Further inspection reveals i lost a weight off my rear drive shaft. I found a shop that will replace both u-joints, balance and paint the shaft for about $145. They say they can do it in a day or so. Problem is i need my jeep to get to work. Question is can i pull the rear shaft out of this and still drive it or will all the fluid leak out the back? I'll put it in 4wd and will basically only have front wheel drive. I've done this before with my old toyota's. Anybody know if it's possible with the kj. I havent taken the drive shaft out yet to look at it. :?

Im pretty sure the fluid will leak out of the tcase if you pull the rear D-shaft.

If you could seal off the tcase then it may be ok to drive around in 4wd, but I wouldnt do any WOT runs or anything. The front shaft probably isnt designed to take all of the load.... You also run the risk of the tcase fluid leaking out while driving which would destroy it.

In short, its very risky. :?

You can't run a KJ without the rear driveshaft because of the rear slip-yoke,when you pull the rear driveshaft out all the fluid will leak out,and there is no way to "plug" the hole.No if you put a slip yoke eliminator on the t-case then sure you can run without the rear shaft.

doo doo thats what i was afraid of. oh well i guess i'll drop it off thursday morning and hope they have it done by the end of the day. :x

Just pulled the rear drive shaft this morning. No fluid leak because there is a seal at the output shaft of the t/case. The slip yoke on the drive shaft does not seal it. Pull that rubber boot back on the drive shaft and see for your self. Anyway i'm only doing this because i need to go to work today and i need the drive shaft done asap. Should be done tomorrow morning. I threw the KJ in 4wd and am able to drive it. It handles weird but it'll work and i have no choice since i dont have a spare vehicle. Good info for anyone else who has to do this or if you break a rear drive shaft or u-joint on the trial. :wink:

Thats good to know..

Be sure to lay the grease to those splines before sliding it back into the tcase. :)

Got a call from the drive shaft shop earlier. D/shaft is done, was done by 3:30pm :shock: considering i dropped it off at noon.. . unfortunately i couldn't get there in time to pick it up today. :x oh well i'll pick it up in the am and install it in their parking lot. :lol: I do not like driving this thing in front wheel drive it's all over the road.
