Post subject:  ESP

For those of you that have ESP does it make a funny sound when it kicks in? Driving back to work from lunch today my ESP started acting up. Its snowed here for the last couple of days so we have ruts in between lanes. When I was changing from one lane to the next my back end slipped out a bit. Not much but enough so that my ESP kicked in. However once it kicked it started making a funny metallic sound. Sorta like a large spring buzzing. Also immediately after I straightened out after changing lanes it came on again throwing my back end out again. It almost seems like it overcompensates and this time I had to correct it. Well after this little fiasco I go into an empty parking lot and start throwing the jeep into corners and what not to try to get it to kick in. I guess the ESP didn't like that too much because it started going crazy with that sound and went on strike. Now my BAS/ESP light & slippery road icons is lite up.
Sorry for the long rant but I guess my 2 questions are> does it make a noise on your jeep & does it overcompensate?

Mine doesnt make a noise like that, it only makes the standard abs buzz/click, and you can feel it in the brake pedal if you are on it. And it doesnt overcompensate either, except on throttle reduction maybe. It sounds like you could have a sensor going bad. Still under warranty?

I sure hope so as it only has 3k on the od. I can hear the abs buzz but also a metalic clang too.

What the ESP was doing was applying ABS to a specific wheel to counteract the slip/skid it was noting. Normal.

So are your lights still lit up all the time now?

Nope. Jumped into the Kj after work and everything was back to normal. I guess I just gotta get used to this electric nanny.
What surprised me was how intrusive it was. If I was even slightly slipping my rear end out or spinning my wheels the esp would literally jerk me back in line. Yesterday it counteracted so hard that it threw the vehicle into the other direction. Not fun. I'm turning it off for the moment, but as we all know it doesn't turn t all the way off. Should relax it just enough though.

Daily driver and never get a chance to go 4wheeling really but we had a real hard rain here and dirt roads out here got real muddy. First time to see what ESP can do --
The system does overcompensate then goes to a limp feel to recorrect itself. Like driving like a senior citizen, real slow and careful. I didnt like it- could not spinout and lose control- no fun!
But NO buzzing or warning dash lites that lit up. Everything worked as it should.
I went to 4WD LOW to have fun-- There ESP is automatically off. That was great!
I have 29K on the ODO.

We got 8" of snow last saturday and I really had a chance to try everything out. I couldn't believe how much it took over at first. Wow! Even with the button pushed it still kicks in. I wish the ESP had a complete disconnnect for the times when you really want to whip it around.

Can you guys elaborate a little more about the ESP...? What year Libbys came equipped with it? Or is it an option? I know when I've driven the wife's Liberty in the snow [in the past] I never had any trouble hanging the tail out or doing donuts with the kids on board...

Thanks,
Clark

it was standard equipment starting with the '06 model year i believe... and optional on '05 model years; not available on '02-'04. the 2008's ESP system is very loud and sounds like a loud grinding moaning noise.

Woot! Well, I'm happy and I'm sad. I'm glad I don't have to deal with that.... Sad for those who do.

Wife just picked me up a Land Rover Discovery 2 for X-mas a couple weeks ago. Anyways, it has a very similar system to the ESP, simply traction control. It works the same in if it detects wheel spin on that wheel, it will apply some braking.

In comparison to my 06 KJ, its far better for use because it doesnt impede your driving. Alls It does is see to it that all the wheels are going relatively the same speed. It doesnt nose-dive, stop dead, cut throttle or overcompensate. I think its far more drive-able.

However, It doesnt compensate on the rover. It just makes sure all wheels are spinning around the same speed, or that you simply have some kind of traction. You can barely feel it on when the light comes on.

The JEEP system is superior in that it acts in all forms possible. If it detects a momentary loss of control, it will do what it must to keep you safe, even if it does overcompensate. It controls more than just the brakes.

I've wiped out a couple times in the rover (being a Beavis mostly). Im convinced that had I been in the KJ, I would have not have lost control, at all.
