Clunking noise when in 4wd

Post subject:  Clunking noise when in 4wd
I recently had ARB lockers put on my KJ and everything seemed to work ok. But in the first snow of the season when I used 4-hi I hear a light clunking noise when I run in 4-hi that changes with driving speed. Sounds like it is coming from the center near the transmission/transfer case area. It lessens or even goes away after running in 4-hi for awhile. At first I thought it was an unbalanced wheel due to the snow but I hvae confirmed that it was not. I have only had two 'tests' of 4-hi but noticed these symptoms both times. At no time in these two snowstorms did I engage the lockers.

I have not tried 4-lo to see if it is present there.

Any suggestions?

This happened on and off for almost two months last winter (mid-November through early January). Checked with a dealership, and the drove it and put it up on a rack. They inspected it and said they couldn't duplicate the problem. The noise -- a metalic clanking like the chain drive on a roller coaster -- hasn't returned since.

Gremlins?

I got that noise too when I was using Part Time 4WD last winter in a snowy parking lot. It scared the heck out of me--I lost most of my power and the wheels were hopping like crazy. I have since found that pulling up/pushing down hard on the lever seems to better engage/disengage 4WD and I don't hear that noise anymore. I have Selec-Trac so I always use Full Time now because that horrific noise was enough to keep me from using Part Time unless absolutely necessary.

I also forgot to mention that it pulls to the right when 4wd is engaged as well. This is a bit disconcerting as this causes me to have to compensate slightly with the steering which changes as 4-hi is engaged and disengaged. This is especially noticeable when you disengage and there is that delay between taking it out of 4wd and the actual disengagement of the 4wd a few seconds after.

I hope it is not the transverse case. My wifes made noises and then blew up. Locked up and would not move. dealer said that it was all in peices.

I wanted to say transfer case. My bad. :oops:

The liberty does not have a transverse case.

Check to make sure the linkage is adjusted correctly. It may not be engaging into 4wd properly.
