I built a custom bumper for my Kj and it resulted in a warranty issue being denied. At the end of last January i was in Colby, KS hunting pheasants and I was driving under some adverse muddy road conditions (still normal driving conditions) and I accumulated some nasty, sticky mud behind my front tires which turned into cement and caused a couple fender flare clips to break. I had no reason to take my CRD in until last august, at the time a servie advisor told me they would cover those clips under warranty, now 3 months later they are saying they wont. I asked them if I had a stock KJ if they would have the same issue and deny my warranty, the answer was NO. Because I took my cheesey plastic bumper off and cut my splash sheilds up they are denying me, appareantly you are not exactly allowed to have a custom bumper or any other after-market mods for that matter without worry. This is f'in bullshite...

Any suggestions on how to get my stearlership to fix what was broken under normal driving?

BTW I was taking my CRD in with both (2) broken driver window regulators, one of which is going back for the seconf time! Chrysler IS garbage...

I can see them denying warranty on the clips because they can say you broke them taking the old bumper off and putting the custom bumper on. Now if you had a bad trans and they denied it because of the bumper that's another story. It's not just chrysler, they all suck. :?

If it were mine and just some "clips" were broken i'd replace them myself anyway just because i dont like anyone working on my kj. That's just me though.

I can understand them not wanting to cover the bumper guard clips as the area has been modified, so yes voids warrenty to that area , but, that area alone, your bumper has nothing what so ever to do with windows and could not have possibly caused/affected a fault in the window area, thus, should definately still be covered under warrenty..

You're not going to like this, but don't shoot the messenger!

The bumper & wheel well inserts that you modified tie directly to the fender flare. Your modifications MAY have compromised the ability for the clips to hold. Jeep's warrantee is to stand behind the things they designed & sold you, what you have is not what they sold you. that is why they won't cover the clips.

I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but I think you are out of luck. :?

My problem with there logic is that if I had stock setup they would have fixed it no problem. I feel they should have the burden of proof here, there is no way that they can prove or even logically suggest that my bumper caused that which was present before i ever decided to build a bumper. The clips that broke are on the tail side of the flare, behind the driver front tire, far away from the bumper. They are just being d!cks and don't want to take another hit on warranty work which they actually told me they would fix. I'm pissed and I want to see were in the warranty stipulations it states that my bumper voids warranty?

Yea, I can see them not fixing those..

And yea, those regulators are kinda cheap.. Doesn't make the jeep cheap though.

First you might want to get what Chrysler considers "normal" driving conditions,I bet heavy mud build up,ice build up,and wash boarded roads are not considered "normal".I know that if your KJ leaks while in a high pressure car wash it's not covered unless it will leak under 22psi of water pressure(garden hose pressure) because anything over 22psi is not considered "normal" conditions.

true. Maybe they didnt know the extent of the mods at the time? Had they looked at the Jeep when they said that?

I pointed the problem out after I showed the service advisor the bumper (fellow wheeler) and he said they would fix it under warranty, i'll check them on their bullsh!te. It's all about the numbers with these people, I had a different advisor on this, he talked to the other guy about this and the other guy denied saying they would cover it under warranty.

All I can say, is if you modify your vehicle AT ALL, good luck getting ANYTHING covered under warranty. Yes, if you're still covered by the b2b warranty, they SHOULD cover your window regulators...but they don't HAVE to.

if you buy a NEW vehicle because it has a warranty, don't modify it.

It makes sense that Chrysler wouldn't cover a problem this closely related to your modification.

Try another dealership if you're unhappy with the service managers at your current one. There are some good dealerships and managers. I still haven't had a dealership make anything but positive comments about the modifications on my Jeep. They only ever denied warranty claims which were completely unrelated to modifications (stress-cracked driving light and stretched emergency brake cable). They had no problem replacing the ball joints, rear rotors, and TPMS system on an obviously off-roaded vehicle with a lift, modified rear axle, and modified electrical system.

You cut up (modified) your splash shields, drove thru some thick sticky mud, let it harden to cement and it (the weight or whatever) caused a few clips to break. Sounds like it has nothing to do with your bumper...instead it has to do with cutting your splash shield and not taking care of the muddy mess.

That is the thing about more than simple bolt on mods...the more intrusive they are to the stock setup...the more likely it will affect
"part" of your factory warranty.

I brought my Jeep in to get the radiator fan replaced. When they took it off, it was cemented with mud and the radiator was blocked with debris. It cost me $40 (optional) to get the rad clean as new and they replaced the fan. They didnt say a thing, and it was obvious what caused it.

A dealership loses money on warrenty work. They get paid less from Chrysler for the labor portion of the work than they charge normally. So sometimes when something is modified, they will deny warrenty coverage even if it is remotely related.

They cannot however deny warrenty coverage for your broken power window motor (because you modified your bumper) as it is not related. This is a fact right from the dealers mouth.

Warrenties can get tricky. For instance, the first thing my dealer does is get a build sheet which will tell them what came stock on the jeep. Then if they have to take off say one of my MOPAR skid plates that did NOT come stock on my jeep but I put them on myself, to do a warrenty repair because the skid is in the way, they can charge me for the labor time to remove and replace the skid. But if the skids came stock on my jeep (think Renne with off-road package) then no charge. They don't have to charge but they can. This helps them recoup some of the lost labor charges. This is a fact right from the dealers mouth.

Anyway, from your explanation of the problem it seems related to what you did and the first service manager shouldn't have told you it would be covered and now is backtracking out of it.

Just my take on it from what was said as I of course did not see it.

I was wondering about that. I figure any Mods like lift kit, oversized tires, front-read bumpers, etc., would void it. I guess the good thing about that for me is, I bought mine used so I don't have a warrenty!

I bought mine new and have had a bunch of new ones and have never used any warranty in my life, well except for getting my 1979 351 Modified balanced and blueprinted under warranty  I mod them from the get go the way I want them and dont look back. Used to work in dealerships and know what happens in them!

I know the stories they tell not to do anything and that was what we were telling back in the 70s can only imagine now.....

What's the big deal, buy 3 new clips for $1.10 each and fix it yourself.
