How is the 4x4 activated in the front diff of the libby? Is it like the Cherokee that locks the front diff with a cast fork that moves a collar via air pressure? Or is it something else? N |

Front diff is always turning when the front wheels are turning. Front drive is engaged via the transfer case no locking hubs, no diff locker on stock KJ's |

N You must be thinking about the old XJ's b/c the newer xj's are set up just like the kj. Youre thinking of the old vacuum setup. Im not sure when they stopped using that. It was the early 90's/late 80's. |

So it is always 'working' and is engaged by the t-case only? I'm not 100% clear on this. Jeepjeepster wrote: You must be thinking about the old XJ's b/c the newer xj's are set up just like the kj. Yep that's the system I was thinking of. My brother has a '91 (think) that has the vacuum system. The fork broke and had to be replaced with a cast iron one and a manual cable. Either way he was asking me how the system was in the libby, and to be honest, I never thought about it or had a clue. N |

i had an 89 wrangler sahara and it had the vacuum actuated 4wd system in it. i switched it to a motorcraft carb on the 4.2 and got rid of all the vacuum lines and egr crap, and i guess by removing all those old vacuum lines i screwed up my 4wd lol but a company made a kit with a cable. so when you put the transfer case in 4-low, you could have 2WD/RWD 2-LO, or pull the cable to activate the front diff then you have 4-LO. it wasnt so you can have 2-LO, but just so it was a positive engagement not depending on the stupid vacuum |

Easy to under stand just take some time to think about what I say front tires roll on the ground in 2wd front hub/bearing is splined ,female splines, that the tires are bolted to the CV shaft is splined ,male splines, and is slipped into the hub/bearing that is bolted to the tires that are rolling so as of now tires turn hub/bearing turns CV axle turns CV axles other end is also splined ,male again, it is slipped into the carrier that has female splines the carrier has the ring gear bolted to it and inside the carrier are the spider gears and some other gizmos that allow slippage for turning so now we have tires on the ground turning a hub/bearing turning CV axle turning a carrier that is turning a ring gear the ring gear meshes with the pinion gear that has male splines on it it slips into a yoke with female splines the yoke is bolted to the pinion the drive shaft is connected to the yolk via a U-joint the drive shaft is connected to the transfer case via a U-joint so now tires turn hub ,hub turns CV ,CV turns carrier ,carrier tuns drive shaft all this while in 2wd inside the t-case there are "parts" that move a chain drive to engage the front half of the case other parts change from low to high range so in 2wd every thing is turning just not getting power it will only get power when you engage 4wd no manual hub like older jeeps nor a retrofit no vacuum disconnect like the YJ's and ,IIRC, XJ's up to '94 just good ole splines ,nuts and bolts sure it causes things to wear faster but with technology the way it is this stuff still last 150K miles or more and friction that would cause poor MPG is very small hope this helps |
