I am hoping to get some opinions on aftermarket LSDs and Lockers. I've been considering the Auburn LSD, the Powertrax or the ARB air locker. Ease of install is important as is reliability and drivability. My jeep is my daily driver and goes through a lot of highway driving (about 50 000 km/year). If anyone has info on where to buy and cost that would be a great help as well. My trac-loc isn't what it used to be and I was waiting for it to wear out as an excuse to improve on it.

thanks!

Ease of install - Powertrax
Reliability - these are all pretty good, but the ARB has a lot more that can go wrong with the compressor, air lines, etc
Driveability - Auburn or ARB

Skyjump136,

What has your experience been with the Auburn. Performance? Price? Do you have a part code and where did you get it?

Will the Auburn perform better than the factory Trac-loc or is it basically the same thing?

Thanks in advance,

And what makes the Powertrax easier to install than the others (ARB excluded)?

You guys need to check out this topic:
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=166

It explains why the Powertrax is easier to install. Basically, you just pull your spider gears out and pop in the locker. No need to reset backlash, install onboard air and air lines, etc. Can be completed in under 2 hours.

It also explains why the Auburn and TrueTrac LSDs are better than the OEM Trac-Lok.

There are other great articles in the Tech Articles that you should read before making a decision.

Here's the write up I did on the Auburn install. I think it has all the info you asked about.

I noticed some people are taking thier lockers off for winter. Why?? Is there a time you wouldn't want these on? The Power Trax that is?

With a limited slip, when you step on the gas and the wheels start to spin on ice it will pull the car sideways. That's a lot of fun in an empty parking lot but not great in traffic. With an open diff, the wheel with the least traction will spin but you will keep going straight.

Yes an open diff will go sideways !!!

NOT as much with a Detroit True-trac!!
(This is the one to have in snow)

True-trac makes such a diff in control of a vehicle on slippery surfaces that it should be the LAW that they are installed in every TRUCK or SUV PERIOD!!!

When you need Locker performance, Click the e-brake a few clicks to give a little resistance.

THIS IS THE ULTIMATE DEVICE.

A limited slip is WAY better than a locker in snow.

I was thinking more about city driving, were you end up with polished ice at an intersection. I guess the open diff being better on ice only really applies to 2wd.

My vote for powertrax, easy to install and a true locker.

ARB is good cuz you can turn it on and off when you want. But really, my only downside, if you want to call it that, is an occasional cling sound and squealing of tires in tight spaces.

Offroading pushes through anything.
