Hay guy's I don't want to hijack jetsons thread have a question of my own on roof racks
1 con ferr's web site (instructions) from what I read their saying NOT to mount your spare tire on it ,is it not strong enough?? but looking at clint's pic he's got his on there,or am I interpiting it wrong

2 Surco sell's a spare tire mount for thier's does this mean thier's is strong enough & the factory cross rails will hold the wieght.

3 will it make it top heavy? how easy is it to remove the spare if needed

The Con-Ferr that All J's sells is modified to be able to handle a tire. They install a strong floor in the rack and bolt the rack to factory mounting points via a nice set of cross rails that the rack is welded to. Removing a 60+ lb. spare tire from the roof is pretty easy, (just push it off, but make sure you are on level ground) getting it back up there is when it gets a little tough. I really do not like having the spare on the roof as that extra weight up top is a bit more than I want to deal with on the roof.
I have the 33" spare for my XJ inside the back (it Just fits) and I am sure that if it had been on the roof I might have gone over on at least one occasion. Once the KJ is running 33+" tires (SFA), I will be looking into a rear bumper w/ swing away tire holder to keep it off the roof.

I have Surco's and my 31" MTR tire fits up there great. So far so good. The factory rails are holding just fine.

I had the Surco Rack on my old XJ. It held the spare for five years. With no problems. But geting a 31" tire down from there was a @!%#@.

I have every confidence in this rack. And, will be puting a new one the ole KJ this winter. :D

I have Clint's rack and I put my tire up there. Mine is all welded to add strength though...
