LOST JEEPS :: View topic - mods order dilema

You can do a clevis lift to the front suspension to get about 1/2" lift for free. then get some skid plates. That & driving skills should get you through many hunting & fire trails, if that is the most you drive through. Then depending on your needs, I'd guess tow receiver next.

Since you do want to go off-road, your first priority should be full skids underneath. Nothing worse than doing serious damage when you least expect it and then cost you dearly.

Order:

1. Skids
2. Get the recovery for rear hook or hitch w/ shackle
3. Rock rails/sliders/bars
3. Lift
4. now get those wheels

No matter how easy a trail you plan to go off-roading on, crud happens. You want protection.

Now, if you want to stay on-road for awhile, then get those wheels first. Since it is winter, get the wheels if you know you can get the protection by Spring and off-roading time.

I figure 5 soft 8s mounted and balanced with tax will run close to $500.

WOW,where do you plan on buying them from? That's real high.Try DiscountTires,those soft 8's are really made by Unique Steel rims(and sold as Cragers) and Discount carries them,seris 252 or something like that.I got my 16x7's there for $52 apiece,heck the 15x8 rims I just bought from there only ran me $40 apiece.

Below is the list of stuff I want to do - but money shortages will only let me do one thing at a time, with weeks or months between mods. (Sound familiar to anyone?) Since I got the Revos and front tow hooks on, I suppose logically the rear hitch/reciever hook should be next - and it would make sense to do the gas tank skid at the same time. Problem is, I really WANT the black wheels ASAP- probably soft 8s, which is more appearance than practical, but will do more to "man up" the Jeep I think and make it look different from all the other Libertys I see. (I'm ranting & whining, huh? Sorry.) Anyway... Just curious in an informal poll kinda way - what order would you all do or did you do? Or maybe I forgeot something else more important? (Already got recovery gear, etc.) BTW - I like to be prepared to go off road if need be, but don't really do much of it recreationally. Mostly rutted hunting trails to get to the cabin. Could be a point for the skid plates though since I run on stock suspension.

I definitely understand your funding dilema. I personally went with the recovery points first. Then armor up. Skids first then sliders. I rather be protected than just lifted. I buy a piece of armor here and there as I can afford it. Then when I have them all I'll invite some friends over and put everything on at once. Then I'll start saving for the lift. Just my 2 cents. I agree here, when putting your skids on, do a clevis lift at the same time (going to look into this for myself). Then pick up a receiver for the rear.

I agree skids first, then move on to hooks, although you need hooks before you take off on a trail. Wheels would be towards the end of the line after everything else , although it certainly does change the looks!! Oh to answer KJPilot Yes everyone and their Mother!

X2, Protection first. could even make an argument for rock rails and skids in the first 2 spots. but they are the important items. You already have wheels and no protection. Wrap that sucker in steel first.

Thanks for all the advice. You guys are right. I'll go with at least the rear hitch/tow point and gas tank skid then we'll see. The other three plates only total about $150, so those shouldn't take too long to get next. Might as well wait for the nicer weather for the wheels anyway. I figure 5 soft 8s mounted and balanced with tax will run close to $500. That's gonna take a little more time. BTW - I know it's on the forum somewhere, but I shouldn't have any rubbing issues with the new wheels, right? Even though the BS is - what - and inch different? They'll just stick out a little more - correct?

About the same as the black rockcrawlers. I'll look around a little more as I get closer to getting them.

I paid around $55 for mine new.
