Okay, this is probably a dumb question since i've been wheelin' a couple years now but honestly the thought never occured to me. i'm researching 4x4 trails in Colorado for my trip this June and one write up mentioned 4x4's that auto lock (i.e. don't require hub lockers, like us) do not have 4whl drive when in reverse. He said you only have 2whl drive in reverse (which, if true, means effectively 1whl drive unless you're fully locked).

Huh??? Alright, so who's got the info on this one?

Actually, now that i'm thinkin' about it that doesn't seem right cause i've pulled a lot of people out of snowy ditches (in reverse) and seem to remember the front wheel kickin' up snow as well as the back. Still like to hear answers though so thanx.

And BTW, any LOST folks in Colorado, i'll be looking you up in a couple months here as i'm looking to spend 2-3 days around Yankee Boy Basin & Black Bear Pass.

Our KJ's the front axle is "locked" in all the time,no auto locking hubs on ours. When you shift into 4wd your in 4wd forward or reverse.

The liberty never unlocks the front axle. If you have it in 4wd, its in 4wd.

So I guess that means that our mpg's are suffering 95% of the time that we are in 2wd since we are always locked? What is this costing us? 1-2 miles per gallon?

Excellent question!

I have a proposal for you. Go do a long trip with standard setup. Then remove the front drive shaft ( the one from the transfer case and to the front differential ) or the CV boots from the wheels to the differential then do the same run again!

Tell us what you come up with
