Post subject:  How much did your brakes cost??
So I hit 55K and decided it was time for new brakes. I took it to the shop that I have gone to for years (my old pick up cost a whole 120 bucks to re-shoe there) but today $460. Front and back disc and shoes and machining the rotors. Makes me wish I had a driveway. Upside is, the dude at the shop agreed to install my Frankenlift this spring for cheap.

i did the fronts for each rotor $35, front pads $25, so $120 total.
had the rear done at a shop for $200. go figure.

Power Slot rotors(front only)=$200,Napa ceramic front pads=$45,rear Napa ceramic shoes(drum brakes)=$75,and new spring kit for rear drums(from Napa)=$10.Labor was free since I did it myself.

Raybestos AST rotors, $50 each ($27ea my cost), Hawk pads, $75 ($45 my cost), and readjusting the rear drums (we charge $30 for a clean/adjust), labor is usually $120 each axle regarldess of whether they're drums or disks

Post subject:  I had a little mis-hap in December
I hit a patch of ice and slid sideways into a curb drives side wheel first. Shattered the rim, trashed a 6 month old tire. I bought a new rim from a LOST member and the tire shop replaced the tire under road hazzard. They then informed my my front rotor was warped and for a small expence of $350.00 they would replace the rotor and brake pad I said I'll take cxare of it later. I can do it myself at that price.
NAPA $115.00 rotor and pads
Autozone $112.00 rotor and pads
Advanced $70.00
PepBoys $110.00
Checkers $85.00

Just pull the old rotor spray with Brake clean and scrub with a scotch-brite pad install new pads both sides and I'm done. I have all the tools except the jack stands. Brakes are a lot easier today then they were years gone by.

Ahh brakes. I was going to replace my pads this week, went to the local auto parts shop and got a good set of front and back pads for $160 (danish pricing, yes sir). After taking the tools to the street and disassemblying the front caliper I couldn't get the darn thing to let go of the discs. So I thought I'd start the car and stop it soon therafter to see if that might have given me some clearance. No siree.

So with a screwdriver and a lot of cursing and a little injury on my little finger I acknowledged the facts at hand:

1) This being my first time to disassemble anything braking related I needed more experience
2) Changing brake pads can take more than one hour, per wheel #¤#!#¤#
3) I got the wrong soddy pads!#¤ :D:D

Next week I will be trying to get my money back for the front pads and try to find out if the rear ones fit.

They make private label pads for many parts company, in the states anyway they are made in Canada so I'm sure even in Denmark you can find these pads. They have an impresive pedegry so check thing out and good luck in you search for Brakes

I haven;t replaced the brakes on th ekj yet but I would always use the lifetime padds from autozone for a little lore than 20 bucks a set. They always lasted long and never an issue. Did you check em there?

Little update.

Rears don't fit. Placed order for another set of fronts from autoparts shop.

Bought rears from local DCJ dealer, price doubled from autoparts shop. Eek! I will start a new braking strategy by braking very carefully from now on! :D

We do get robbed by MOPAR over here....paid almost 500 euros / $800 for discs and pads....only the front mind you, I've still got drums on the rear :? And I fitted them myself...

2 Duralast rotors @ $33 each, Duralast gold pads $39. -20% discount because my employee discount car still works.

Anyone have a link to what I need to get the front and rear rotors off? The front looks simple, just need the proper sized socet to fit the giant nut in the middle, but I'm not sure what to do with the rear.

You don't need to take the hub nut off the front.Remove the caliphers/pads(12mm wrench) and then there are 2 more bolts on the backside of the rotor area that hold the calipher mount on,remove those 2 bolts and the rotor pulls right off.Pretty much the same for the rear if you have rear discs.

Whoa, glad I asked. Would have been pretty ticked if I fought with the hub nuts all afteroon and found out I didn't need to! Thanks for the info.

All I know is that I am seriously thinking about learning how to change my brakes myself. Dealers here seem to charge around 250 for all 4. I have gone through 2 sets already and last time I went in they said I have... 0.04 left or some crap like that. I do not do that much braking why are they down that much...me thinks I smell a rat.

When I do eventually do it myself I am thinking about getting some cross drilled rotors and some nice ceramic pads to go with it...or so I am thinking right now :)

OTC parts.
Duralast pads all the way around. Still spinning stock rotors and I am at 1192xxK . Not worped or damageg at all. Not even close to being worn down.

It is not worth turning rotors any more. They are cheep enough. (unless after market performance rotors are being used)

I have only changed my breaks twice. Once at 85xxx and again at 114xxx. ONLY BECAUSE I did my frankenlift and said well the entire wheel and stuff needs to be exposed so I minds well do the pads before I put it all together.
I could have gotten another 50K out of them easy. This is with an A/T Tranny.
When I had my TJ and YJ standatd Tranny, I had breaks much longer.

Hmm, that really makes me wonder if the dealership was just trying to take me in the shorts! In the past I have always worked on my own cars, ie oil changes, tire rotation radiator swaps ect...now after about 3 years of using shops I am thinking I should go back to doing it myself. Hell, yesterday we took both vehicles into get oil changes and I watched them. The never took off the front skid plate which a different shop always did, I never saw them swap out the filter but there was a dirty one in the pan when the moved my jeep and then they tried to up sell my wife on everything under the sun, then the realized I was with her and changed their tune. Ant this was at Terrible's. Very sad. She has a Toyota Rav4 that is front wheel drive and they tried to convince her she had a rear diff. I nearly knocked the guy out.
I know it has always been...challenging to find a good shop but it is crazy in this town.

I actually had it in for service last week...and asked them to do a full inspection. They said I need brakes badly.

Cost including Ceramic pads (that's what came stock and they are GREAT...hardly any balck brake dust to clean off the wheels..ever), and rotors, and new parking brake if needed (they weren't sure): $1045.00 Canadian Plus Taxes. My jaw dropped and I asked "Am I on TV here?"

I think I'll call NAPA. Or Get a part time job.

Holy chit! I would have said the same thing, lol. Looking around the office going "ok, where are the cameras. Enough is enough, come on out." That is insane.

If I remember right there is no emergency brake pad. Although as I type that I am questioning myself. So, ignore that part of my post :D
