has anyone had a problem with their KJ popping out of first gear when you take off hard, I have an 05 with 30" tires and it's been doing it pretty regular so I took it to the dealer to have a look at it (it's still under warranty) and guess what, you guessed it it wouldn't do it for them, anyone know what could be the problem and what to do about this I only have about 9000 miles left on warranty dont want to have to replace on my dime :(

thanks

Does it happen only in 2wd? or in 4wd as well? My first thought would be rear diff, second would be tranny and maybe even u-joints. Only my opinion, I am sure that somebody will have the answer you are looking for.

As far as what is doing,so does it totally pop out of gear? Like your in gear but no forward movement?Or is it just slipping real bad?

When is the last time the tranny fluid and filter replaced? Ever change the t-case fluid?

yes loud klunk and no movement till you put it in gear again
just bought it a month ago (preowned) and all fluid levels were check prior to that

i would change the fluid in both anyways just because they are full doesnt mean they are still good. i never know if the previous owner ever even did that u know(maybe u have recipts??) if u wheel it u should change both just to be on the safe side. i did a full fluid swap in my KJ the week i got it and keep it changed more often than it should.. maybe im just paranoid?

I had this happen to me in an '89 chev sprint except it would pop out of 4th gear. It would stay in gear if I let off the gas, but as soon as I gave it gas you would hear a loud CLUNK! as it popped out of gear under load. It had gotten so bad that the only way you could use 4th gear was if you held the shifter while driving.

The entire shift assembly would move as it popped out of gear and resulted in having the tranny rebuilt.

oh no. sounds like you need some serious work performed....if you can take it back to the place you bought it...take a technician with you on the drive test. Rather than turning over the keys to let them drive it, you take them along and show them with YOUR driving habits...that way it gets witnessed and you are not going back and forth because they can't seem to replicate the problem.

I have the same problem exept it is well out of warrenty. The last tranny in a mid 80s ford had a bent shift fork and a worn syncrizer ring. I have not had the time to check the Lib yet. Mine does jumps out of 1st gear in 2wd and 4wd.
Good luck with geeting the dealership finding it, I would take a tech with me to show him.

Just make sure they documented it happening well before the warranty ran out.
If they are a good dealership, they will realized the problem occurred before the warranty ran out and will fix it even though youre out of the warranty period.

I wouldnt change the fluids yet, just make sure everything is at proper levels. If you did change the fluid yourself(or at another shop), they may try to blame it on that.
