So in reading, I've pretty much gathered that all the libbys come with the Dana 30A. I guess I can now understand why some people seem to have trouble getting parts suppliers to give the right parts. My build sheet says Dana 30 which would put atleast some of the confusion blame on Chrysler

4-Spd. Automatic 42RLE Transmission
Command-Trac Part Time 4WD System
Dana 30/186MM Front Axle
3.73 Axle Ratio
Corporate 8.25 Rear Axle
Anti-Spin Differential Rear Axle

I haven't had any problems with any of my driveline thus far, I am replacing the oem rear diff cover with one that has a drain plug. I really don't care to yank the entire cover every time I change the grease plus the stupid rubber stopper is starting to break down.

I guess I just wanted to get a confirmation that I haven't lost my mind, was pretty sure I had a 30a w/ locker in the front w/ a 3.73 ratio

everyone elses build sheet omit the A on their Dana 30's?

yes all of the KJs have the D30A unless they did a SFA, the A stands for Aluminum, and there is nothing for it unless you do a gear change or add a ARB or DTT.

are you looking for something for it?

....off topic.... wellcome to lost, check out the carolina lost sections or www.coastalcarolinaoffroad.com to hook up with some guys to wheel with in the area. Its always nice to have a buddy out there when your wheeling (i learned the hardway). Theres also some liberty nuts out here that can help you with any problems your having. Theres even a shop down here than can do a kick stupid SFA swap on your rig for around $6000, not including tires.

....on topic.... it is a silly thing, but it is pretty much the same dif, except it in ifs form and made out of aluminium. Some lockers that fit the d30 - ARB, DTT, also fit the d30a. I have yet to see a piece of chrysler literature that has d30a in regards to our differential. Also, are you sure you have a locker in the front? Or are you talking about the front & rear driveshaft lock that takes place when your in 4lo or 4hi?

Also, I would recomend even if you have a aftermarket rear dif. cover with a drainplug to still take the cover off and inspect the inside now and then to make sure all is well & to get any metal particles out that may be floating around in there.

and for the 8.25 "anti-spin" differential is whats known as trac-lock or "trash-lock" as it has become known as in the jeep community  its a limited slip that helps to reduce spin, but doesn't work that good imo. The 8.25 has a larger variety of lockers from around $300+

again, welcome to lost! hope to see you on a trail soon.

Thanks, just got a pm from James / ohv as well. I'll definatly come see you guys, I'll be moving up midwest to IL in May but I'll be back in the area several times a year.

thanks for the clarification on the A , makes more sense now
and yes i'm sure the front is locked

lol, if the 8.25 is built anything like the limited slip rear end i had in my bronco II then I understand the "trash-loc" terminology. Like I said though, I've been fortunate so far, it's served me well

If something breaks or I get spunky and do an overhaul I would like to go all the way around with air arbs

if you wanted to regear the you cannot use the regular D30 gears its really nothing like the D30 your think. and unless you installed an ARB or DTT or the previous owner did it does not have a LSD or locker in the front.

there's a dtt in the front installed by my brother for the previous owner about 2 months before I aquired it, I appologise I should have clarified a bit more instead of saying locked which would overall be incorrect, I called him to double check so i wouldn't stick my foot in my mouth again

those SFA's are very tempting.. very very..

I've just recently started doing stuff to my Jeep after workin on everyones stuff other than my own, so other than maint. stuff my jeep is still very new to me.

You seem to know the libby drivetrain pretty good, are the airlockers a bad idea with the 30A with it being aluminum? I haven't had any issues with limited slips front and rear so far but I don't go rockin, which may change when I move up to IL

I freely admit I don't know enough about my own vehicle to have been a mechanic as long as I was. Thats one of the reasons why I'm here, to learn! I appreciate you guys sharing your knowledge, good infos hard to come by these days

No arb is not bad, theres even an argument that they help strengthen the d30a. DTT, lots of people run them with no problems. The main thing that kills the dif is the gas pedal. You can get a diff. collar for to help with the structure, but it won't keep the dif. from blowing, it'll keep it in one piece till you get it to a repair shop tho

Good to know :) I'm definatly going to keep that option open over the next bit. I learned to stop being a gas pedal brute when I had a super cheyenne with a blown 427 and super swampers. It thought the driveshafts were toothpicks and rings were doughnuts. Have to admit I enjoy driving jeeps much better.

if you already have a DTT in there I wouldnt change it, and the debate is mainly over the DTT the ARB wont affect it at all if its not on, whereas the DTT is always on.
