My service manual tells me that my 03 KJ has an 81/4 rear differential, but it says the front axle is a "186FIA". Whazzat? I was reading some of the other forums talking about Dana 35s. Is that the same? This is a great site: everything you need to know about a KJ...

Actually, it's an aluminum Dana 30, or D30a for short. Same axle all KJs come with.

Thanks, folks. So, is it a smart choice to put a locker into an aluminum Dana 30? Will it hold up? Sincerely, Confused in Canada.

well, as for that question... I guess it depends on your situation? Do you need it?

As for will it hold up, well mine has for about 3 maybe 4 years now with the ARB.

I do not know if anyone has traced down a specific reason for the failures we have had. Maybe it is a simple matter of whose were built after noon on a Friday

Most have blown on easy stuff as I recall, and others were admittedly horsing them a little too much. Mine, well I have bounced the front hard enough to bend my lower control arm and bust a cv shaft, but the diff is fine "knock on wood"

The only reason I put in a locker for the front was price, back when I did it I got the pump rear, front, and air up kit for the price of just the pump and the rear now, then I had a buddy that owned his shop to installit for me pretty cheap.

So it depends on if you need it. And if you feel lucky... well... do ya... punk!! sorry couldn't resist.

Personally I would do the rear and see how it goes for you then if you feel the need go for the front. I will admit, I rarely ever use the front. But when I have it has saved me greatly, one time I think it even helped me avoid a near certain roll... sorry to scare ya Joel

Just remember different lockers act differently, and you will need to re learn how to drive your jeep when locked to a degree.

For more info on lockers go to the tech threads, I believe there is a real good description of what is out there.

Sorry so long,
Ted
