Post subject:  Issue: Front D.S. or Transfer Case?
So I'm still trying to figure out the clunk from this video. There is also a whine that comes from what seems to be the transfer case, or that area. It is audible at slower speeds and can hear it goes along with the acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle. It is not audible when the KJ is not moving.

now i crawled under the kj and got another video of the DS play. It seems to be coming from the where the DS meets the transfer case. There is a little clunk going up and down, and a ping going forward to back. I went under a KJ at the dealership yesterday and there was no play in the ds.

sounds like mine did. only mine was much worse. The CV joints have more than likely gone out. It seems the only solution to be either buy a new stock one for around 350-550 for a direct bolt in. Or a tom woods custom shaft with U-joints, which I have heard is a lil more than 500, but requires much more work...

well i've gotten 2 quotes thusfar on front driveshafts, both used. one has 21000 miles on it, $65 +shipping. The other is $150 shipping included. I really hope it is just the DS and nothing with the transfer case.

I figure the Tom Woods driveshaft is worth it if you keep your Jeep long term because next time there is a problem you will just be faced with replacing u-joints that are way less expensive then replacing a drive shaft every time. Plus the Tom Woods is built way better to begin with. JMHO. :D

and also when buying used shafts with CVs how do you know that they aren't shot, unless the person your buying from really knows whats going on. If those prices are good, then put me down for which ever one you don't but.

no problem, i also found another used one for $75. the guy said it has been inspected by off-road mechanics and is decent working condition. i asked him to elaborate on the "decent" part.

the service manual doesn't show a rear boot.

Never seen a service manual picture of that region, but i'm pretty darn sure mine has a boot :lol: if you don't have a boot on a CV axle, it WILL die in VERY short order.

It shouldnt have a boot covering the entire joint Jeep4me. This is the best pic I can find but Ill get a better one if its needs to be gotten. The boot is turned towards the inside so it looks like it doesnt have one, but its there.

You can hardly see it.

That's interesting since my front driveshaft has a boot on both ends,granted it's a '02.

Look closely,you'll see his boot is missing or severly ripped and missing part of it,you can see the socket in the CV joint(look at end of arrow,1st pic),my pic(2nd one) has a rubber boot clearly covering the CV joint.

well here is some pics of a shaft i'm about to purchase. in one pic you can see a clamp that looks like it would be to a cv boot.
This is everthing I need right? Anyone know the torque specs for the bolts?

***Edit, just went out and checked, I do have a front boot, you can see the clamp for it in the picture TJKJ just posted.....problem is, i was able to stick my finger through it*** :shock:

Like that did you :lol: .

Jeep4me99 that pic of the driveshaft you are going to buy shows that the rear CV boot is present on the shaft,it it is not torn you can't tell since it's only a side shot.The CV boot is not like the front CV boot,it's part of the joint itself.
