I've had water over my hood several times before. If I was brave enough (and my wife would let me) I'd certainly put a snorkel in.

Hey Seth....if you can get me the number of the Snorkel that will be the closest match...I'll give it a shot...I have no fear of taking a sawzall or a hole saw to my rig...since its going to be going thru some extensive changes anyway... I welcome the challenge

The KJ with the snorkel, Fouros posted, IMO is too short and I don't like the metal look. I'd prefer it to be black plastic/rubber and go up along the window frame and be at roof level.

Our boy from down under is correct. However... When I have the nerve to cut a hole in the fender, I believe the Old Style Tacoma Snorkle will fit cosmetically. Snorkles aren't exactly rocket science. http://www.safari4x4.com.au/docs/snorkel/ss170.htm Check out the diagram... it's basically the same shape we would need, and the antenna is even in roughly the same spot. You can heat them up to mold them if it's not dead on. I think it would work...but I don't have the stones to try it yet. It you screw it up, that's one big band aid you're gonna have to put on it. There is NO room under the hood on that side, but I think a tube could be run inside the flare to the box. After that, block off the factory horn, make an inlet for the tube, seal her up, and you're done. Anyone can make one. Anyway, the Company answer is don't hold your breath. But if you're feeling froggy, try that.

yes, there are. I have one on my YJ. I had to also run breather tube lines from all items with air venting like the front and rear ends (water in oil=bad), silicone most all of the electrical connections, and Rhino Liner'ed under the carpet. Water in the exhaust isn't a problem as long as you don't let the motor die or idle to low.

Since we're talking about some serious fording here, say I have relocated all the breathers, installed a snorkle, sealed all the electrical connections, and made sure all other things are sealed correctly, what about the fan(s) and the alternator? I know in some vehicles you can turn off the fan for deep water fording so that it won't disintegrate. Would we have to make a mod for this? And with the alternator, I know you can't just seal it, so what do you do? I'm assuming that running the alternator with water in it is a bad thing. Is this another mod requirement? I don't plan on doing any of this in the very near future but maybe sometime down the road or with a different vehicle.

H2O 101... Water is bad...anyone have an old YJ that got water in the distributor because of the holes in it? Yeah, you sat there for 10 mins til the thing dried out, and it sounded like it was running on Hamsters until it was done drying. Not good times. And another quick tip...you sink in the water/mud and get stuck...DON'T SHUT IT OFF!!! Water goes right up the tail pipe if you do that... can you say new Cat / Headers? If you truly want your rig to float, and they do it in OZ, you gotta seal EVERYTHING. Some guys even have pumps in the cab to get the water out while they're bobbing down the Billabong. We have a sales video of an FJ40 bobbing down the river for 5 mins, then it hits the beach, rolls right up it. Cool as hell, but it was an Outback Challenge truck worth about $100 grand... Here, the snorkle will handle it as long as you're not in there for more than a minute or two...the snorkle keeps water out of the throttle body/carb which is the first place it's gonna go when it's truly rolling in over the hood. Most engine compartments are pretty water resistant for a few minutes...so don't sweat the small stuff. If you want a boat...well, good luck with that. You have to seal it all up and that's a huge project.

I'd like to do it after the lift, etc. but i'm not sure i would do it with one that isn't made specifically for the KJ, unless of course someone else is the guinea pig...

I'm interested in how it works too... Since this is my first 4x4 with paint that's too nice to eff up, I've got some reservations about bustin' out the hole saw (unlike my Trooper and Montero, LOL) ANYHOW, ally, definitely hook us up, brotha, and make sure to take some good accurate measurements;)
