In a nutshell, the 2005 liberty uses a electronic sensor on the rear axle that sends its signals to the BCM (Body Control Module). From there the speed signal is determined by the computer and output to the rest of the vehicle....unless you have ABS brakes. For a liberty with ABS (03 and up) the speed is determined from each of the individual wheel speed sensors.
In my case, I do not have ABS but the dealer swore I could not do it. It can be done see below:
Here is the excerpt out of a 2005 FSM. I don't know if it will work the same if you have ABS. Someone else will have to chime in on that one.
