Post subject:  front driveshaft boot

I noticed the the front driveshaft boot on my 05 Renegade is torn/ cracked where it goes into the transfer case. Is this caused by the heat from the exhaust. Can I replace just the boot, it doesn't look like there was grease in there like a CV joint, just wondering what would happen if I let it go without repair. Thanks

If it looks fresh, you might get away with just replacing the boot. But overtime dust, grime, mud, etc... will get in there and destroy the CV's.

yea man take care of it now.

My first drive shaft and CV went on me because I did not have a boot on the drivers side. I atually never knew it untill it was too late.

The front drive shaft has to be replaced, you can't replace just the boot.
You're looking at $385.00.

you can replace just the boot.. you can order one from mopar (a real hard plastic like boot) or one from J.E. reel that is a nice rubber boot that wont crack so easily. Then you can rebuild it yourself.. or pay a mechanic to do it (that's the route i took). either way.. it's WAY cheaper than buying an axle (even though you can buy re manufactured ones for 100). i just went though this when my CV boot blew out on the passenger side.

There talking about the front driveshaft(from the front t-case output to the front diff),not the front CV axles(front diff outputs to the wheels). The front driveshaft in the KJ also has CV joints on it and they are not serviceable, you must replace the entire shaft if one of the boots get torn.

I have had CV Joints go out, When the boot let go there was grease everywhere. I checked the jeep, and saw no grease flung anywhere. Also I don't see anything on the front drive shaft that looks anything like a CV joint, where the rubber is split and I peel it back a little bit, all I see is what looks like a bearing in the front of the transfer case. Since its not vibrating or making noise I'm wondering if I could get a universal boot at the parts store maybe even for a front drive car and fill it with grease and put it on to buy a little time, don't have the $$ right now for the axel, maybe this would buy me a little time, what do you guys think. Or could I drive it with the front drive shaft taken out at least temporarily. Thanks

tjkj is right about the shaft not being servicable (he usually is). Well you can definatley drive it with the shaft removed. I ran mine without a boot (only because I didnt notice it was missing) for a little while then I started getting some pretty knarly sounds after a few dips in a mud hole. As far as a universal boot that I'm not so sure about. Start saving for a new driveshaft.

I found that mine was torn when I was replacing a O2 sensor. Its covered under the 7 year/70K warranty (If it's still stock).
